Funky Christian music?

Also, I think you could be surprised at what's coming out of Nashville these days. Modern Christian music is a WHOLE lot better than it used to be. Every year it gets better and better...and more varied.

I checked these guys out, great stuff! Thanks! Great tunes, killer bass playing. It's refreshing to hear modern Christian music that is actually creative and soulful.

I second the Charlie Peacock stuff especially with Tommy Sims on Bass. And in the Urban Gospel vein Pages of Life by Fred Hammond is a bass clinic.

Maybe this is a bit trollish, and probably has nothing to do with your statement... but how is Christian music that just sounds more like what's already been put out there more "creative and soulful" than Christian music that sounds more like what's already been put out there? Whether it sounds like "Here I Am To Worship" or "Crazy Train" or "Soul Man", either way, it's still more of the same stuff that's already out there. Not bashing anything, here, just something I've been thinking about. I like it all, everything from Relient K to Fred Hammond to Rachel Lampa. Not a big fan of "New World Son"... it just sounds a bit... cheesy. Just my opinion. Reminded me of that Ska tune "Jesus is a Friend of Mine". I'm not a big "Funk" aficionado, though, so I wouldn't know. I was expecting something like Funkadelic.

I just re-read your post, and I get what you're saying. It's refreshing to hear modern Christian music that is creative and soulful. You're saying that modern Christian music that is creative and soulful is rare, not the other way around. I agree. Everytime I hear an "original" P&W song, it's all depressing Avril Lavigne chords.

So I'm a little late...........been on a funk fix lately. My favorite type of funk......guys like Rubicon, TOP, Sons of Champlin. But lately I've been diggin the horn section of "Here Come the Mummies". Unfortunately their lyrical content has little to be desired. I like how they fuse funk with Fania, which adds a bit of excitement for me. just checked out Fred Hammond for the first time today....really like his music, complete with a positive message.
