Funky Christian music?

My Christian band "Seventh Time Around" does some funk, but we don't have any good recordings of that yet.

Glad someone mentioned these cats. My band did a couple of gigs with them back in the late 90's...They are a killer group.

Israel Houghton gets down

This! Seriously, Israel & New Breed is a sick band! Chris Coleman played drums for them at one point, which says a lot.
They can hang with even many of the best secular bands.

With all due respect to the believers, there is a certain attitude and celebration of excess involved in making good Funk music that seems to me diametrically opposed to the call of Christians to be humble. It's pretty much true of all popular music and probably why almost all modern Christian music is sub par compared to the secular music it is imitating.

Let me hip you to Abraham Laborial. He is one of the most sold-out Christians you'll ever meet and he also plays with more joy and abandon than any bassist I've ever seen. Oh yeah he's world class too.

I got to see him live once at a worship conference (he was sitting in with the house band) and it was inspirational in every sense of the word.

Gungor is a 'christian' band that I've been digging lately. Some groovy stuff there too. Check out Heaven that he wrote w/ Israel Houghton.

My Goodness, I am shocked that nobody here has recommended some Danyel Morgan of Robert Randolph and the family band. I'm not a bit religous, but Danyel's grooves are amazing! Not mention, Robert Randolph wails! I also saw a gospel band that opened for gov't mule last fall that had some insane bass.

Fred hammond is a great singer but he also plays a mean bass. But he sings here but I think some of his records he also plays bass. here he sings live but i really like the groove on the verse also the harmonies are great also.

I play this to my classes every year to mess with the sub in PA lessons. It goes down well with EVERYONE, no matter what genre they favour. The good stuff is the good stuff.

Actually, the Bible says, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord." IMO, modern black gospel music takes a back seat to no other modern music, in quality or enthusiasm. I can't speak for Christian pop/rock, though.
