Quite a few local CL ads for bass players say equipment is provided. I figure if a band needs to provide equipment for a member, they have fairly low expectations.

"Having to provide" and "having" are two different things. Some people have been playing for years and have lots of extra gear. I jammed with some new guys last week and he told me on the phone that he had a bass amp I could use. He also said he had a bass but I brought my own. And these guys weren't hacks...the guitar player was good and the drummer used to tour professionally when he was younger. And I tell ya...it's a treat not having to haul a bass rig in a Winnipeg winter when it's -35 and you have to park 200 yards away. I showed up, plugged in my bass, and was ready to go in 30 seconds

I play bass but have guitar amps, electric and acoustic guitars, drums, and a PA in my basement. If I trust someone enough to let them in my house, I won't have a problem letting them use my gear...and it saves dings on the wall from people carrying amps down the narrow stair case to the basement.

Its easy to add gear. You see a deal on Craigslist and you trade a piece you don't use for another piece that you "might use". I have a Fender half stack, a champ-style guitar amp, a small PA, a few mic's on top of my bass gear. I also have a full drum kit that is stored at my parent's place. Can't play drums at all.

$25 to learn let's say ten songs, then lose a day- two hours each way and at least an hour for the gig- for the possibility of future gigs...I don't think so!

If the only thing running through the PA was vocals, then yes, the vocalist should provide it.

But when have you ever seen an electric band that didn't mic drums/amps, run DI from instruments, stage monitors, etc?

PA is for the whole band, but yes, I've known plenty of singers who had their own equipment up to where it plugged into the PA.

As far as that goes, I've got everything I need to mic my cab, and a DI box just in case.

However, I expect a singer to own and bring a professional-level mic with them. At least an SM58 - not Nady, not Samson.

The reason that the band is supplying the bass rig is so that after the audition, the musicians auditioning can leave. No 15-30 minute wait each way for setup/tear down. As long as the auditioning band has a quality rig i don't see the problem although i would bring my own bass.

I read once when Pat Smear was in the Germs he would just show up at the gig and borrow the opening band's guitars and amps.

Seems like it was the right thing to do.
