Simple math. What's your annual gas bill? Let's say your existing furnace is 60% efficient. You can figure out how much you will save for each kind of furnace. The difference is what you will save by choosing the one furnace over the other. That, in turn, will tell you how many years it will take for the higher efficiency furnace to pay you back.

Or, do what's better for the planet.

How cold do your winters get? It may be that the super efficient units aren't sold in your locale because you just don't have huge heating bills in the first place.

It was kind of an akward moment when the salesguy offered to stop by with the quote, but I said I'd prefer to meet him at his office and see the shop. They were all agreeable to my request.

A good heating company should do a heat loss calculation to properly size the furnace. Window area and efficiency (single, double, or triple pane??), and insulation levels should be taken into account. This can't be done accurately unless they visit your home. If they tell you that XX square footage needs a XX BTU furnace, they are just guessing.

An undersize furnace won't be able to keep up on the coldest days, and an oversize furnace will short cycle most of the time which is not as efficient.

I get that, and they all did come to my house. One guy offered to give me a quote on his initial visit and we accepted it, the others said they would return with a quote in the next day or two. Those were the ones that I offered to go pick up.
