Fuzz and Distortion and Overdrive ... Oh my ...

I've been messing with effects again. I have an Octave pedal on the way (I really am not sure why). Anyway, I have always loved my SansAmp (either you love it or hate it, right?) and I would occasionally play with a Big Muff (childish laugh). Then, at one point, I added an MXR 78 distortion to go with that vintage guitar amp bass crunch. I will be honest, I never really have a reason to use the distortion, and Muff was only on occasion. As I was setting up my board - which is starting to get silly - I flipped on the fuzz, distortion and Sansamp overdrive and found a great sound. Of course, that sound is very similar to Chris Wolstenholme ... and to prove it, here is a clip of me playing my 2008 American Standard P-bass through the pedals and direct in to my Mac recorded totally dry in Logic.

I don't know, personally. While I love distorted/effect-heavy sounds, this one sample is too dirty for my tastes. Maybe dial down the fuzz a bit? The bassline on Hysteria is not so fuzz-heavy (although you'd need some pretty specific pedals to reach Wolstenholme's sound).

I almost never use it myself. I just thought it sounded cool - but being in a bar band playing classic rock I almost take advantage of it.

IMO, it seems like he almost nailed it with the limited effects hes using (compared to CW's effects setup). That bass riff is pretty heavily distorted and or fuzzed out so Im not sure what you mean by the bassline on Hysteria is not so fuzz heavy......... Its got quite a bit of fuzz and gain going on.....

Great job OP! Ive always dug bassists who cover this song/riff and show their use of dirt with it, usually very cool. I think you did a really good job keeping it wooly yet tight. Given your setup and so forth, its pretty darn close IMO.

It may not be too fuzzy but just a tad too grindy. Sounds great though! I think if anything just a little synthy effect on the fuzz would bring the whole thing home. Either way good job man! Keep rocking!
