Fuzz/Distortion for chords?

In a math rock 3 piece, to stand out lot of my lines are either A: Way simpler than the guitarist (im also the singer so i have to keep it simple) and B: use a lot of chords
whats a good dist or fuzz for lower bass chords that keep them open and loud sounding, a lot of stuff i try are too compressed

Less is more when it comes to bass chords & distortion, if you want clarity. I was just cosigining the Fuzzrocious Lil Fella in another thread for its fuzz abilities, but it's also a dual-stage OD wherein you can use just the Gain circuit for a light bit of hair, and its Tone control can help keep things airy. It doesn't have a blend knob (and I'd pay to get that added to mine), so if you want both depth and air, you may need a clean blend solution, but it does what it does with excellence.

I'd say multi-band distortion is the ticket here. Would add the Boss BB-1X to the above (more of an OD, but can get fuzzy). If you want gnarly, compressed distortion, that still retains clarity for chords, try the Boss DA-2 (haven't used the pedal, but use the same A-DIST algo on my GT-1000).

I’d stay away from fuzz face types because (many) they can drop low end and unless you want to follow a rabbit hole it’s hard to find the right one.

Some makers really understand bass.
Look at Asgard 3 by Blackhawk Amplifiers. Look at a Russian or Rams head type from Wren and Cuff or Stomp Under Foot. I’m no expert. I own over 40 fuzz pedals. Some suck on bass. Some are amazing.
Reason I like Blackhawk so much for your OP is A) he plays bass so he gets it, B) he plays heavy so he gets it and C) he uses Baxandall EQ and specifically designs some pedals for bass heavy tone.

And he’s a cool l’il small business kinda guy.
