Fuzz it up!

Just started using a fuzz after many years. I needed it for a theatre show I did a few weeks ago. I have a Nano board, so I was looking for a mini format. I ordered the sfx micro Fuzz. Great sound, lots of variables, well built, and Max in England is a great guy to correspond with. I manage to get a nice fuzzed up sound that still holds its punch. Sounded freakin' amazing with phase or chorus on it in an 80's dance tune.

I have 4 fuzzes and non of them are bass specific. I think you'll find that most of the guys on this board have at least one non bass pedal. I have a Gnomeratron VTF(Muff mixed with a Brassmaster), A Copilot Orbit(gated fuzz + VCO), Zoom UF-01(weird oscillating/gated) and an Idiotbox Blasteroid(sort of gated/fixed wah). I have them all either because I liked the demos I heard or I tried them out in the store and liked them. There's a soundcloud link in my sig if you want to hear what I sound like. I don't think the Blasteroid or the UF-01 are on any of my soundcloud clips but the Gnome and Orbit are. Fuzzes are awesome I don't think I'll ever get rid of any of these pedals but I will get more. There's just so many awesome flavours of fuzz out there you can never have too many.

I have a few fuzz pedals that I like. Only the Darkglass is specifically for bass. Although it SOUNDS AMAZING on guitar.

- The Darkglass Duality - absolute insanity in a box. Absolutely nothing subtle about it at all. Talk about ways to get a diesel engine sound, a buzz saw, anything. Worth every penny. But could be a bit more subtle.

- The AnalogMan Peppermint Fuzz - Dark - great fuzz pedal. It really does one thing well and if you are going for that one thing then its a jewel. If not, the lack of flexibility could be tough for some. I wish it took a 9v adapter even if the battery does last literally FOR EVER - like years.

- The Keeley Fuzz Head - a fuzz face clone of sorts with silicon and germanium options. Some very classic fuzz options. Doesn't lose the low end like some older fuzz faces can.

Currently rocking the EQD Hoof Reaper, two fuzzes in one with an Octave up. Works pretty well! Still keeps a decent amount of the low end. I love the Tone Reaper side of the pedal, which is modeled after the old school Tone Bender fuzzes. The Hoof side of the pedal is a more modern high gain fuzz. With the Hoof, dynamics are counter intuitive though; if you play hard the fuzz is "squished/compressed" but if you play soft the fuzz opens up (this could be the case with most, though I've only had experience with a Russian BM Pi). With the Octave up, I can get some of the sounds of a You're Doom/Wonderlove when I pair the HR to a SA Manta.

I'm currently waiting for a Darkglass Duality to arrive in the mail (Monday or so). Next after that will most likely be a Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian (Sovtek Clone).

I use fuzz a "little". Meaning I have no need for boutique fuzzes. I use the MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe, which I love solo, however it seems to get lost in the mix. Very tweakable, and I'm determined to get it to stand out in the mix! My other fuzz is an EHX Deluxe Bass Big Muff. LOVE it! Crossover took a bit to get used to, but the blend on this is great. A dark fuzz. The MXR can be as dark as the EHX, but the EHX can't be as bright as the MXR. There are some overlapping tones of course (excepting the crossover) but they're very different beasts.

I love fuzz. Especially crazy fuzz. Right now I have:

Grey Stache-Awesome muff clone
Dwarfcraft TGD-Just absolutely insane in soo many great ways. Super Heavy.
MXR Blue Box-Synthy 8 Bit octave fuzz. It is fun but its soon to be replaced by SS/BS custom BUZZZ
Malekko Diabolik-Fantastic octave up fuzz. Holds the low end like no other!

I've tried a stupid amount of fuzz pedals and the only one that ever have me a boner was the TAFM (Team Awesome Fuzz Machine).
I'll vouch for that one, too. Didn't expect to like it because it's germanium and I generally don't like germanium at all, but got talked into trying one and I stopped looking after that. Occasionally I think I'd like a smaller one that doesn't have all that gating and extra stuff that the TAFM has, but I like the fuzz it makes and so I stick with it.

I have been using one of these with my rick 4003. I don't know if it would work with every bass but I get a wall of thick fuzz and don't notice any low end loss.
