Fuzz it up!

Jimmy, if you happen to have the newer, narrower, portrait-orientated version, switch off the internal buffer and plug a passive bass straight in to make it sound even better!
Mine's older. This is it:

Man, so many to choose from! I was using the Darkglass Duality for a bit, which I liked a lot. But I got the fuzz bug as of late and wanted to try some other things. So I remembered hearing about the B:assmaster a while back and how raunchy and awesome it was. I looked into it and stumbled upon the VFE wood chipper. I found one and made a trade. Got it yesterday and man, what a fuzz!! This is my idea of a fuzz. The octave fuzz on it is rich too, very strong sounding. Ive heard almost nothing but good to glowing reviews of the Team Awesome Fuzz Machine (TAFM) as well. Would like to try it one of these days. But Im super happy with the VFE right now. Gonna stick with it for a while.

What has happened to me??!! A year ago, if you wouldve asked what kind of fuzz I liked, I wouldve told you, NONE. The last couple months, for whatever reason, I feel this need to try every fuzz pedal Ive come across or know of. What happened??? I always heard so many bassists talk about fuzz and I never really dug. But man, Im a fuzzhead! This cant be good.......

Fortunate that I only went through 5 to find one I liked and could return the ones I didn't like. I keep threatening to get something smaller than the TAFM, but it serves my needs, so unless one just jumps in my lap for cheap, I'll stick with it. I tend to stop when I find something that suits my purposes. I'm weird like that.

I guess I could stop in that case. I really like the wood chipper I recently acquired. I can't wait to get it live in the mix. But I still want to try a TAFM and that spaceman stuff. Those pedals sound crazy good and you can so some really whacky stuff.

+1 on the TAFM. Extremely versatile and is the only fuzz on my board. It narrowly beat out the W&C TFR even though that's the "fuzz in my head" tone. May need to get that one back...

Currently I'm running something that blew my brain. I currently own 8 fuzzes, most of them Big Muff Clones/variants. One of my favorites is the Swollen Pickle. Really tweakable, and really versatile, but I get sometimes kinda muddy or lost in the mix, or even solo, when playing fast. I run this pedal into the loop A of a Boss LS-2, and in the Mixer mode. The other loop unconnected. and the "dry" loop volume a little higher than the "fuzz" loop. Even friends that heard me live last times, went to me to figure out what i'm doing to sound like this. (I play Heavy Fuzzy Stoner Rock/Doom/Space Rock) This involves two pedals instead of one. But I liked it A LOT more than the Pickle Pie B, Bluebeard Fuzz(which I LOVE), and a home made Tall Font Russian Clone that I built/mod several times.

The TAFM is my favorite, but the ss/bs Hawk is a close second. The Hawk gets no love/props here on TB, which I can't believe because it's so heavy.

I also have finally gotten into a band where the Swollen Pickle Mk II works well. The SP has a ton of low end on tap, but is prone to losing punch and definition. I definitely tweaked the internal trim pots a lot, and have found it to work in a band that's doing 60's and 70's style stuff, where a muff-style fuzz fits and the guitarist never gains up too high or uses fuzz of his own. In more sonic situation - with an active keyboard player using lots of aggressive synth tones and a guitarist that has a number of gain levels on tap, as well as fuzz / bit crushing - I found the SP to make me disappear sometimes when I'd kick it on. In that band the TAFM and the Hawk rule though.

I also have a Red Ripper, and I can't recommend it, I'd get the TAFM over it.

The Duality and the You're Doom seem to be the newest hot things on TB right now. I'd love to try them some day.
