Fuzz pedal help

Hi, I'm new to the forums and playing bass too. Stoked I stumbled across this site, so much knowledge in one place! :bassist:

Anyway, I have a question regarding fuzz pedals. I did search first but didn't really come up with anything. I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a a fuzz pedal capable of a hairy mammoth/hairy balls style gated synthy fuzz as well as a more classic bass big muff style fuzz?

Trying to avoid splashing out on both pedals if possible! Not sure if such a pedal exists but any help i can get would be much appreciated. Thanks!

In my limited experience with fuzz pedals, I think it would be hard to reconcile gated synthiness with the oversaturated distortion-ness that is a muff... that's asking a lot from one pedal, and even if you did find a pedal that could do both, you're probably better off with dedicated pedals for each sound, for one because it's a pain to reconfigure your knobs on the fly, and two because I'd think it would be better to have separate masters of their trades than something that may be a jack of multiple trades.... But I really guess you'll have to see if grygrx chimes in, he's the fuzz guy.

There's some guy making this Tentacle Fuzz thing...He's an very important person, I think...hmmmmmmmmm...I heard he's naming a child "Fuzz"...well as a middle name...;)

PM grygrx! His upcoming pedal might do what you want (http://bassfuzz.com). There are plenty of options available for shaping your sound and IMO, it sounds better than the mammoth. If this pedal is not what you want, there are a whole lot of fuzz to sort through and GAS over on his site.

if you can afford it, get the devi ever bass fuzz (very gated synthy, has its place though I can't really use it all the time...) and then get a more classic fuzz,... the main reason I stepped away from multi fx units was because they tend to be jack of all trades, master of none,... and my limited findings, pedals that combine two sounds tend to be better in one area than the other (ibanez chorus / flanger comes to mind to me...)... that said theres some excellent stuff out there,...

two blowtorches on different settings? but thats overkill and expensive hmmm...

thats my biggest problem with pedals, theres always that extra pedal good for a scenario out there ;) trying to get by with only an 8 pedal board tho (+ wah)

No gating on the TLSF.

I think something like the MI Audio Neo or GI fuzz might be the most able to meet the description of the original poster. The 'Bias' knob on those fuzzes can be set to a point where it will gate, but they are also capable of more classic sounding fuzz (esp. the Neo). Warning the NEO uses inverse power and can't be used with other pedals on a non-isolated daisy chain.

The Devi Ever Bass Fuzz is more synthy/industrial sounding than a muff. If you were looking for two pedals, it and then a Bass Big Muff might work as a nice pair to get started with, and then you could worry about moving up to the big boys if they didn't meet your needs.

Thanks all, some things to think about there...

I might pick up the big muff first and then go from there. Problem with the more boutique pedals is that they are hard to find out here and so i cant try them out first, and they are expensive given the ass just fell out of the $AUD. Might give the brown dog a go on the weekend though.

very true,... I ordered a bass fuzz from devi ever when the aussie was a bit better,... was still cheaper than buying most pedals in aus tho! I think I paid 150 incl shipping? too long ago, but was surprised when most pedals I look at always seem to be in the 250+ range :(
