Fuzz: the Sound that Changed the World

Netflix it. While there is lots of cool footage, it's not exactly a great documentary. there's absolutely no central thesis and the continuity is all over the place.

Lots of cool stuff gets demoed, but I found this movie to be pretty revealing about the amount of voodoo, snake oil and amateur hackery in the boutique effect world. And not always because the director was trying to do that (and he does, regarding black goop, making zach vex look like a jerkazoid, etc) - for instance, he comes off as a death by audio fanboy. Let me tell you I would never pay those guys a cent, they would probably spend it all on airplane glue - and that's based on the footage in a film by a huge fan of theirs!

definitely a must-see for anybody who spends time lurking in the effects forum, though

I had some of the same thoughts. It seems like all the dudes they cover are either wacky, stoners or geeks. The BJFE guy is made out to be rather shady and wacky. I'm amazed the Death By Audio dudes get anything done. Seems like they can do fun stuff but lack the motivation to do it. ZVex is just a weirdo, which makes sense. I find it funny that the D*A*M dude started building pedals cause he wanted a cheaper version of a classic Big Muff and is now selling his clones for ~$300.

I agree that cloning is a good thing in the sense that classic circuits are continuing to be improved. But obviously the negative side comes from charging insane prices on slightly modified clones.

I agree %100, and this is why I find this to be such a good movie. It really shows the otaku like obsession that some of us have over this pedal thing. That being said I've been battling gas on a $300-$400 modded clone of a Supper fuzz so I can relate to the dark side of this, but, I have will power.........................................I think:hiding:
