Just wanted to share my recent experience with FYD Amp service in VT. After seeing his ad in Craigslist and hearing lots of good stuff about Dan here on TB, I decided to contact him about information on a 50-ish watt tube head for bass. Ad said text or call, I was at work so I decided to text. His initial response was that he wasn't currently doing new builds. No problem, I get it. My thought was hes probably so busy with straight repair work. So, I asked if he could recommend anybody. This is where it got a little weird, he said "ha" and that I should look on craigslist for a fender rumble. I was confused to say the least, but it's hard to read tone in a text and I don't know his sense of humor, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and asked why he wasn't doing new builds, his response was "long projects, uninspired". Now I was just disappointed. I know everyone has an off day here and there, and I get that maybe he could have been thinking I was just a tire kicker, but still....I'm sure he really knows his craft, i hear good things all the time, but to suggest that somone in the market for a custom built tube amp go look for a fender rumble, idk. Not knocking rumbles at all, I love em, just a different thing all together.
I was really looking forward to finally having the cash in hand to get a nice tube amp built by a local builder with a great reputation, and that experience just turned me off. I know he doesn't need my business, and I don't want to say anything bad about FYD, just wanted to let others know what my experience was. Maybe it was my approach, idk.
