Hey,
I was jw if guitar fx would work on bass, or do I have to buy bass-branded fx (harder to find they are...)

Short answer: You can use them.

Long Answer: You can use them, but depending on what kind of effect it is, it can suck the Low End out of your sound, and so you'll have to experiment to find which ones don't suck the low end, or just buy a signal splitter that lets you blend some clean back in with your effects.

As the previous poster said, you may just have to experiment. I have quite a few pedals running through my rig that weren't necessarily made with bass in mind, but seem to do well nonetheless. They include a few danelectro pedals: Phaser, chorus and tremolo and also an EHX Electric Mistress. Another option (And one I'm really considering right now.) Is to get a Barge Concepts VFB-2, which is a effects loop pedal that has a clean blend knob. Basically, it can allow you to mix in some of your "uneffected" bass signal to your effects, to help compensate for pedals that are low-end or tone suckers.

I have a couple of guitar pedals on my board that work fine, but I have the VFB-2 you mentioned anyway, just so I'm free to use absolutely any pedal without fear of robbing the low end.
