Could I replace the series jumper wires with series normalization resistors and have this work?

How would I wire it so that I get inner singles/parallel/outer singles with bass boost?

The resistors should still work, though you might want to adjust the value as the capacitors will change the output of that setting.

I don't think the wiring scheme you're suggesting would be possible using just a DPDT switch, you have to choose either inner or outer singles for the whole switch. Plus if you had them opposite like that then you would get no hum-cancelling effect if you had one pickup in single and one in swbb, which is the setting I use most of the time. For that matter, the resistors would also lessen the hum-cancelling balance to some degree with one in single and one in scwbb...

I've read that in order for the scwbb mode to be hum cancelling the .1 mfd caps need to be on both outer coils. Does it look like the diagram has it this way to you?
 
According to the bottom of the diagram, this will give you "outer" coils for the single coil setting. It doesn't matter which coil the capacitor is shunting the highs from as long as you use the opposite coil for the other pickup for hum-cancelling purposes (so exactly the same as single coil- inners or outers). This diagram will give you hum-cancelling single coil or "single coil with bass boost" with the outer coils when both pickups are on full. There will also be some humcancelling effect when one pickup is in single and the other in "single coil with bass boost" with both pickups on full, though there will still be some lower frequency hum from the additional bass boost coil signal. If you are interested, it is also possible to wire the capacitors to a switch so you can have either series or "single coil with bass boost".

Oh yeah, I knew it gives the outers - I just didn't know if the caps were positioned so that it was set up for hum cancelling in series. If I wanted to have parallel/inner coils/SCWBB would I just wire the bridge like the neck and the neck like the bridge?

I would LOVE to know how to wire up a switch to activate the SCWBB mode so I could have series as well! So, howdya do that? I've got a 4PDT on/on/on for the main switch and a DPDT on/on for the cap switch all ready.

Well, apparently this diagram doesn't do scwbb. This is what Ken Baker, the guy who made the diagram, said:

Scwbb? Meaning single coil with bass boost?

Just re-proofed the circuit for the umpteeth time. You gotta get some pencils!

That circuit, as drawn, doesn't do scwbb. SC is on the Y/G coil and the cap is on the B/W coil (as proofed).

Humcanceling will occur in parallel mode, SC with both pickups at equal levels, but NOT in series with bass boost. The caps cause an imbalance that defeats humcanceling. Remove the caps and series will be humcanceling.

It IS a series connection, but acts more like a single coil with additional bass content than a series connection with additional anything! It was called both interchangeably by G&L at different periods though.

A diagram for the correct way to wire it to retain hum-cancelling for scwbb can be found in the document I linked for you from the badassbassplayers G&L forum on the last page- I didn't look too hardly at Ken's as I assumed it was the same. My L2000 is actually wired a bit differently, as I figured this out for my old L2500 before these particular wiring diagrams were readily available. I wired mine with the express intent of making single coil with bass boost humcancelling, and the single coil addition was mostly out of convenience. I trust that the DavePlaysBass diagram is good though and it doesn't require me to draw up a new one as he graciously made a public document already!

This will give scwbb in the series setting, right? Will it be hum canceling in scwbb?

The dual coil MFD soapbar in series mode is fully hum canceling so long as those OMG caps aren't there. It isn't really single coil at all because both coils are in circuit and making a signal. In the case of the diagram that fourstringbliss is using (its basis is a DavePlaysBass circuit) both coils of a pickup are connected in series, but there is a cap there sucking off some of the treble from the Y/G coil. The unaltered signal from the B/W coil is then added to the signal and it's off to the EQ. The OMG cap is connected and used pretty much the same as the old G&L L-2000 circuit, found Link Removed

The circuit path for the series switch position goes like this (edited to correct numbering, though it makes no difference electrically):

  • Ground is connected to green at lug 6.

    Yellow is connected to lug 2

    Lug 2 is internally shunted to lug 1

    Lug 1 is externally shorted to lug 4

    One lead of a .1mfd cap is connected to either lug 1 or 4 and the other lead is grounded. This cap filters off high freq from upstream Y/G coil.

    Lug 4 is internally shunted to lug 5

    Lug 5 is connected to black

    White is connected to lug 3 and to pickup select

What we end up with is the upstream Y/G coil having a slightly different impedance than the downstream B/W coil. This impedance mismatch is what causes hum canceling within that pickup to be defeated. As funny as this sounds, it's an upstream-downstream sort of thing, where the signal runs from ground through the coils and switching and off to EQ.

So, does scwbb sound anything at all like single coil? I've read it's like single coil with a lot more bass, but this is making it sound like it's essentially series with less treble and more bass. Series has enough bass and not enough treble for me! If it really does sound like a single coil with boosted bass then i'll give it a whirl.

My ears tell me series mode has more treble than OMG mode. If you turn on the preamp in treble-boost mode you should be able to get enough treble from series mode IMO. You can also roll the bass pot back, which will help the treble come through more.

Hmm. I've removed the preamp from my bass and if OMG has more treble than series mode I think I'll pass. At this point I have inner/parallel/outer switches for each pup - I might go parallel/inner/series with both instead. I sure don't need less treble than series - I could always roll the treble pot back.
