G&L Club Part 7

I vote for any G&L with a quarter sawn neck, for starters. Although an L-5000 has never crossed my path I would not hesitate to grab one if it did. And I'd hope for one with a sickle headstock. I think it's G&L's best looking one, along with the Interceptor's.

I have these on my reverb feed but the only recent one has an issue I don't wanna deal with.

I will give them credit for being honest about the issue. However, they are pricing it like it is in perfect shape. These do not pop up often, but when they do they tend to sell for around $1000. $1300 is not out of the question, but it definitely is for one with issues.

Has anyone figured out what kind of jazz-style pickup might pair well as an added mod - JB neck position - to the Kiloton?
We've sorta gone back and forth.
Last thing I remember is someone said the SB-1 bridge pickup wouldn't be good for this application.
Maybe a Fralin overwound?

I would try a JBE Jazz pickup (J-Style Pickups for Jazz Basses - JBE Pickups). Hum cancelling and frequently described as MFD-Esque for a J pickup. Not sure how well the output level would pair up, but you could always add a magnetic pickup buffer if the output balance is off (something like Adjustable Gain Buffer - AGB & AGDB - Bartolini Pickups & Electronics).

I have the JBEs in my JB5 and really like them.

What I really want is a passive Lakland 44-02, but made by G&L.
This might be the best path, since I have a Kiloton and I'm not afraid to mod, as it's really not my #1.

Nah, passive with a single coil at the neck spot is what I want, keeping the MFD humbucker at the bridge.

I would also add between 3+2 Eye-gouger and 4+1 Eye-gouger I prefer 4+1

3+2 for me, wish they did 3+1 or 2+2 on the 4 strings. None of it is a deal breaker.

The warpedneck.com guys will want $300 + two-way shipping to fix that neck (~$350 tot minimum). Add that to the $1300, plus $130 shipping, plus whatever sales tax applied via Reverb...

Whoa........$1900 plus the hassle of sending the neck to Tejas? If Atomic were asking $600 I'd still pass on that one. It's been on Reverb for a year, but still no "Make Offer" added to the listing. Apparently they are really proud of that one. It's Bahama Blue though, so there's that, I guess...

Me too. I like distinctive headstock shapes, along with the traditional shapes. Even better when the strings go straight in-line from the nut to the tuners.

Not to stray too far off topic, but since headstock shapes entered the thread temporarily....

Everyone has their personal tastes and favorites. Sometimes a specific headstock shape can hit the eye "just right". Here's a couple that look special to me...YMMV

No shouting down from me, might be a nice compliment to the Kiloton. That said, I'm not convinced that the 2nd gen SB-2 bridge pickup is the same wind as the 1st gen s/c SB-1 and SB-2 pickups. If I had an SB-2 right now, I could A/B it to a Lynx and prove it to myself once and for all.

Even so, I've been through a buncha gen2 SB-2's. Whenever I solo'd their bridge pickups all I heard was a noisy, low output that was unusable in any context (to my ears, at least). Good as an enhancer for the split MFD though, for sure. OTOH, the Lynx bridge pickup solo'd sounds decent enough to be possibly useful to someone, even if that someone isn't me.

In keeping with the G&L spirit, I'd be interested to know what a split MFD might add to the Kiloton's voice. Fire up the router!

Kiloton owners- which strings do you like? The previous owner of mine shipped it with Ernie Ball flats, but I'll be changing those out since I prefer rounds.

Well as long as the router is plugged in, and you're stripping your mental gears, why not add TWO splitters?
