I'm not advocating against Stingrays. If you want/need the Stingray sound, get a Stingray, because trying to make another bass sound like one is going to end in frustration. I've done it too many times (with other things trying to make them sound like other things).
Callowhill made a P bass with an unseen MM type humbucker buried under the pick guard just before Tim passed. I was on the fence about ordering one at the time but was low on cash and just plain couldn't swing it. Is a MFD hot enough and shallow enough to work in this scenario? I have been thinking about either getting a used Tribute SB-2 or ordering a Warmoth body and giving it a shot.

Hello all. I'm thinking of re-joining the G&L army by purchasing a used USA L-2500. I found one that is a shade under 9.5 lbs. It's super comfortable, but I'm concerned that it will be too heavy for my back. My other 5-strings are all much lighter.
Given that many L-2500s weigh over 10 lbs, I'm curious if this is about the lightest I'll realistically find? I am aware that there is (or was) an Empress version, but I don't see those very often.
So I guess the question is whether I hold out for one that's lighter, or accept that 9.5 lbs is among the lightest I'll find used?

Lighter ones exist, but are harder to find. I have seen Empress ones between 7 and 9 pounds. If 9.5 is going to be an issue for you, then you need to wait or buy something else. I have never had an issue with weight as long as I have a good strap (4" Moody's are my go to). Noting that is easier to say for me now than it probably will be in 30 years (I am still in my 30s). Ultimately you know your back better than we do.
Most of my basses are in the 9.4lb. range. I do notice it a bit during longer sessions, but I'm used to it (and I'm definitely NOT in my 30s). I'd be concerned if a bass were over 10lbs. but I find 9.5 reasonable. However, if you're used to basses below 9lbs and prefer a lighter weight bass, then I would wait for a lighter one, understanding that it may cost a bit more, due to the rarity of these.
Mine is ash body 9.7lbs. Have a JB5 empress 8.6lbs.
One player's fair weight is another's boat anchor. Too many contributing factors for anyone but yourself to answer.
Trying to get exact weights on used basses is dicey, at best. The good news is there definitely are some sub-9.5 lb L-2500's out there. Good luck.
9.5 ain't too bad for a fiver. you can find lighter, by a few ounces. But I've yet to see or own an L series 5-string under 9 lbs. m sure they exist, just not IME.
Thanks for all the replies. I re-weighed all of my 5r's and saw that they range from about 8.1 lbs through 9.5 lbs. So this is a greater variance than thought. My takeaway is that 9.5 lbs is pretty good for an L-2500. My other 9.5 lbs bass feels heavy, but not unmanageable.
The L-1000 750 is back from the setup and it's amazing. The neck feels great, it's well-balanced, and incredibly versatile for a one pickup axe. My only issue is that it came with a loose treble knob from the factory. The rotation feels less smooth across its range. I told the shop to give it a looksee and tighten it up during their setup and it looks like they did (i.e., not loose) but the rotation still isn't smooth. They also said everything was fine in the control cavity.
Not sure whether to bring it to another shop for them to see, but it's definitely a little needle in my side.

Hey all. I'm finally getting my Tribby Kiloton Fretless, it should be here in a month, maybe a little less. For those who have or have had one, is the factory shipping them with roundwound strings? I saw a recent review video on YouTube with one which was, and there was already wear on the fingerboard from them. Link below. As per the video, maybe I'll try tapewounds on this one. If mine has roundwounds on it, they're coming off first thing.
My SR did not sound clanky at all. It did growl, which to me is a good thing. I like to hear some texture in my tone. My L2500 growls.
Hi all - Is there a G&L that meets my requirements? Would I need to go custom? I think that would exceed my budget? I don't see fretless under that Fullerton section of their website.
