G&L Online Store

It's been sold. I decided that it was just too good a deal to pass up. I bought three lefty Tribute 4 string necks a few years back when they were blowing them out for 39 bucks..yes, that's right- 39 bucks! I built two budget basses using them, and I still have one maple neck, never mounted, in my shop. I'll finish it, level the frets, and install the parts from my stock on hand, and have a maple neck, if I feel like it is to my preference. I've done a little research, these Indonesian made Tributes seem to use USA pickups and Bridges. We'll see. I'm not sure which lefty I bought- one has a closer grained Ash body than the other. I'll find out when it's unboxed in a couple of days. These are currently $749. at the big box retailers. $300.00 was a killer deal!

Looks like they currently have a lefty L-2000 for anyone who's interested.

They had a 2500 a few days back at 12 pounds! Wowee!! I passed on that one. I do like the skinny string semi-hollow bases that show up there but am worried the string spacing and nut width would be too narrow for me. Maybe for my daughter if she gets into it!

I think as you said the Indonesian ones use actual USA pickups, but you may want to upgrade the pots/cap to better matched US components as well.

Not a problem, I'm a luthier and repairman. I keep a supply of pots, caps, and jacks. Whatever it may need, I probably have it. I would say it probably works fine as is. I'll inspect everything when it arrives. I believe these are active, so- it's a matter of R&R the preamp, if it fails. I've seen American made G&L preamp issues, but not in any Tributes ao far. I will find out soon. G&L Tributes- guitars and basses, I've seen and worked on, were very nice, well made instruments. For 315 bucks with FedEx shipping to Reno, NV. it was an irresistible deal. Especially for a lefty.

The active pre in the L2000 is mostly a buffer/booster preamp, while both of the EQ controls are just passive (bass cut and treble cut, which is equivalent to a standard passive tone control). I’ve wired a few L-series basses as permanently passive as I never found much use for the stock pre personally.

I just got the bass. Man, I have got to say.. this bass, is a killer deal, I'm beyond satisfied! I opened it up, it seems to have the same preamp I've seen in USA G&L's. I might be wrong about the pots, but all this looks very familiar to me. The pots work counter-clockwise, I prefer the other way, clockwise- full on, and I mod all my basses to have the controls oriented in this manner. I just did some 'directly out of the box adjustments- almost every guitar and bass needs this. Adjusted the neck, action, and filed and polished the protruding fret ends. I didn't go all out here, because it IS going to shrink more- this is Nevada, and it's summer. One weird thing- the 'saddle-lok' set screw is missing. I'll just put one in from my stock. I wanted to HEAR this thing! I plugged into my practice rig, a mixer with my computer sound card in two channels, and the bass trough a Boss GEB-7, and shedded some Lee Morgan. Man.. this bass sounds wonderful. And the tones don't really 'boost' per-se, but you can tell they are indeed active. I tried all the settings, and I love the treble boost setting with any pickup combination. I'm also posting this on lefty bass .com.

Another thing to keep in mind, these are b-stock. If you look, you will see “2” stamped over the serial number. Might not matter to the purchaser, but could matter on resale. I had been keeping an eye out for a nice L2k or SB/LB. The price bump has probably taken me out of the market for one of these from here.

I just got one of the last lefty L-2000 tributes at 300 bucks. Seems like I lucked out. Those are 500 bucks on the site now. But nearly DOUBLE the price? Wow.
What do they think they're selling? Gasoline?
My bass indeed has a '2' stamped on the back of the headstock. It's inside the serial number circle, not glaringly obvious. It's not getting sold, so I'm not too concerned. I am a Luthier/ repairman, and cannot find a single issue on this instrument that would make it a factory second. Well, it seems like when something is too good to be true.... it is.
