G&L or Yamaha?

Recently I've been gasin for a new 5 string. I've narrowed it down to the G&l Tribute L2500 or the Yamaha TRB1005, which both go for around $800. I want something that will withstand years of heavy use and be able to handle all styles of music. Which would you buy and why? I'm also open to other suggestions under $1000. :help:

Neck is quite thick. I almost didn't buy one because of it. Just kept getting pulled back to the sound. Have learned to love the big thick neck. Very comfortable with it now.

Might be able to find a used USA version for that...but you could also find a used Trib for a lot less. There's a used sunburst in the TB classifieds right now for $440. Not mine, don't know the owner...no dog in the fight.

Another Schecter to consider is the Riot. I've had mine for about a year.
Very solid, very comfortable and well-made.
Also, for that budget, you could get a used Lakland 55-01 or the upgraded 55-02

Nice solid B-string on the beast.

Please note, I'm not trying to necessarily talk you out of the Schecter or the Yamaha. I really like a lot of Yamaha basses, just never was in a position to buy one. Stumbled into a shop that carried G&L when I was a complete newb. Just fell in love with the sound, the look and the quality.

Your first post spoke of "years of long service" and I think you could fight your way out of a mosh pit with the thing and finish a set.

Some argue about the weight and I have played one made in Korea that was just a brick. Mine is a 2009 bass and it is 9ish pounds. Very comfortable.

Don't take my word for this... our tastes may differ widely.

Good luck with your decision.

I would recommend you play them first. While both are great basses they are drastically different animals in feel and sound. The Yamaha has a much wider neck with correspondingly wider string spacing and a flatter fretboard radius.

The Yamaha is active only while the G&L can be used in active or passive mode.
