Get the G&L. Tributes I've played have been nice, but the last few Yamahas I tried had bad fret ends, slice your fingers if you're not careful.

G&L or Yamaha?

I'd get the G&L. I'd buy used, but, if you do buy a new tribby, remember that they've got the same electronics as the US models.
Between the two you've picked, I'd pick the Tribby. Personally, I found the electronics in the TRB1005 to be kind of bland.Recently I've been gasin for a new 5 string. I've narrowed it down to the G&l Tribute L2500 or the Yamaha TRB1005, which both go for around $800. I want something that will withstand years of heavy use and be able to handle all styles of music. Which would you buy and why? I'm also open to other suggestions under $1000.
Since you're open to other suggestions, I would strongly recommend a used 55-02 -- especially since you're looking for something flexible and rugged.
