G&L SB-2 unusual mods

So I recently picked up this sweet SB-2 on Reverb.
Serial number indicates its from '96.
Three bolt neck design.
The curious thing as you can see from the pictures are the modifications.
A control plate added with one concentric vol/tone and a pickup blend.
Its pretty clear they cut the original pickguard to fit the control plate etc..
Seller says they bought it that way.

Curious what you guys thought and on the off chance you know something about this specific bass DM me please.
Thanks

Was the seller the original owner? If not, I would question it.

I doubt this bass left the factory like that.

So per my op the seller bought it that way...from an individual. It did not leave factory that way this much I know.
It sounds amazing and I love having this level of control on an SB-2. I also really dig the look...I just want to knw more about these sorts of mods and or this particular bass history. This thread was a shot in the dark after a few hours of googling and speaking w/G&L rep

It looks like a really nice player. It looks modified but not butchered. It looks like a proper drop-in. No need to debate why or why not. I wouldn't have messed with the treasure chest in that bass but people have done much worse. First thing I thought of Prewired (for J Bass) Passive Harness (Volume-Blend-Tone) - Best Bass Gear based on the Fender retro style knobs. If it's from Frankie it is well made. Good luck. Beautiful fretless.

An SB2T is a Custom Shop option. Basically adding a tone pot (three control knobs) and moving the jack to the side of the body.

the mod makes me wonder as the Bridge pickup is not really designed to be used by itself. It is designed to be blended in with the P pickup and use as a sort of pseudo-tone control...
I wonder if the SB2T has a different bridge pickup.

Having had a legit G&L SB-2T I can say it's the same bridge pup.
Agreed than it shouldn't be solo'd on a normal 2T but on my fretless it sounds really good solo'd

I like the mods on it, like that control plate on it. I don't know if it's just the picture but it looks like that upper part of the pickguard where it meets the control plate looks like a spot that might get snagged at some point?

this bit that you're referring to is my only "issue" with the bass and its purely cosmetic. It does not get caught or snagged at all. its well filed and is fine. my only problem is aesthtics really. A minor gripe ...I wished it was a bit more ....clean looking. I have some ideas to improve it
