G&L Tribute L2500 Ash Top

Is the “ash top” on the G&L tribute L2500,sunburst with rosewood fretboard, a thin veneer? Or is there some meat to it?
Has anyone played one of these?

I have a G&L JB Tribute with the ash top and poplar body. Due to the sunburst finish I can’t comment on the thickness. I actually used it and several other basses when trying combo amps and ended up not buying an amp but this JB because it sounded so good. I believe the poplar body keeps the weight down, too.

How is the definition on the low E? There are several comments on TB threads stating that poplar bodies result in muddy undefined low end.

Anything but muddy. My JB Tribute ticks all the boxes so to speak. Clean and even tones up and down the neck. I watched a video demo on YouTube of a JB Tribute and the demo sounded thin with no punch, unlike mine. I actually traded my L-2500 Tribute for this JB Tribute.

Was there a QC problem with the L2500 or do you just prefer the sound of the JB? How was the low B on the L2500?

I owned both the L-2500 and M-2500 Tributes at the same time (the M is pictured in my avatar). No problem at all with any of the G&L’s I’ve owned, each one I purchased new from my local music store. I preferred the pickup blend pot and tone of the M series to the pickup selector switch of the L series tribute I owned. Perhaps I never learned how to “tame” my L-2500? Interestingly I felt the tone of the L I owned was thin. Perhaps there was something not quite to spec with it?. My M-2500 Tribute is a keeper along with the JB Tribute. The low B is clean on my M and was clean and clear on the L.

Additional thought, my first bass was a Squier VM 70’s Jazz and I seem to always gravitate to and prefer the sound of jazz basses
