G string out of wack

I have never seen that before. I play the open G string, I get a clean G. Harmonic on 12th fret... I get a clean G, but when I play the 12th fret note (with all the other strings muted) , I get a horribly wobbly sound...

Imagine you're playing an open G on your bass and a slightly out of tune G on the D string at the same time. I get that dissonant sound by playing one fret on one string, with all the other strings muted..... I just don't get it.

I can do my own setups (rod, bridge, string height), so i'm not completely clueless, but with this problem, i'm baffled

Any ideas ?

Do you have a spare string from an old set you could throw on to test? Not sure if the string is bad, but it's a quick test.

Does a tuner show, when G is fretted, the wobbly-bobbly centered around the G? Maybe un-adjust, then readjust, that saddle (you probably already did that...).

Maybe string is twisted?

I overlook the simple stuff sometimes. Pisses me right off LOL.

the pickup is too close.

Try lowering the pickup(s). When the string is fretted at the 12th fret, it becomes too close to the pickup(s), and the magnetic pull causes the “wobbly sound”.

Thank you for the tip, I tried with an old spare string and I get the same result, but it surely was worth trying. Thank you for your suggestion.

Thank you sir, I lowered the pickup and it resolved the issue, I am impressed, I would have never thought of that...

Yeah, when too close, the magnetic pull is great enough to create the "chorusing" you described. A string which twists upon itself during the install may do the same. Glad to hear you're back-in-business!
