Gain or Master for volume control on SVT-CL

I am trying to play with the sound coming from my amp. I was wondering if the classic users preferred the gain knob for volume control or the master knob.
I have searched the threads and read that the gain knob as the main volume control gives more of a 70's ampeg sound. Is this true or did i miss read it.
Any input would be nice.

If you want to keep it clean with max headroom, run your master up pretty hot - old ones didn't have one so they were always wide open.

gain is in the preamp
master is in the power amp

choose what YOU think sounds better.
