NBD: Mayones Cali 4. Small but fun!

I just received my Mayones Cali 4 bass and I love it.

First, this is NOT a standard bass. This is not meant to replace a standard bass. Honestly, it's for fun and has a unique playability that I find very fascinating. Plus the kids love it. My 4 year old wants to learn bass now!

Second, this bass is made so well. It's made as good as some of the other top end basses I own. Just because it's small, doesn't mean the quality is any less. This is my first Mayones bass and based on this, I will likely purchase another.

The tones: They are incredible. the pickups are wonderful and the ring out very well. The only downside is because of the size, there are tons of overtones that need to be quieted down. I placed a fret-wrap on it and it works wonderfully.

The finish: It's called purple matte, but looks more blue with some hints of purple. I'm love the contrast between the blue and the wood finish around the sides.

All-in-all, I feel like this is a great purchase and can't wait to play it more...too bad I have a job.

I'm really interested in this as a practice bass. I spend a few months with my-laws every year. I'm thinking of getting something like this or getting a full size bass and leaving it there. Do you fill like if you practice on it, it would translate to a full size bass?

No, it doesn't really...

I have to say this is based on only 1 week experience with this bass, and it is entirely my personal experience - your mileage may still vary!

First, it's a fantastically well-built instrument and I own two other Mayones basses, which are my go-to basses. But, as much as I wanted to like this one also, it was not for me. I had problems already finding a comfortable position to play it (with or without a strap). The scale size and the fret distances threw me off and the very close fret spacing at higher frets is tough to get used to. All in all, it requires a lot of "getting accustomed to" and I didn't feel that is where I wanted to spend my time on.

If I were in your situation (with the in-laws), I'd probably have a full size bass standing there.

(Again, this is my experience. But others have said "this is not a bass, it is a stringed instrument in its own right" - I think that is very accurate).

Thank you for the reply. Yeah i guess the scale length means its really its own instrument, albeit as very cool one. That's a shame, I was looking for a good excuse to get one. I will get a full sized bass instead for my in-laws.
