Double Bass Galli BSN920 L-Synthetic & Bronze

Has anyone tried this set? Their website lists tension measurements, but the diameters are missing. I'm very curious to know the diameters....does anyone know?

Depending on what the string diameters end up being, they seem like a potential replacement for the Velvet Blue or Anima sets in terms of tension and the bronze wrap.

Tension:
G 23.97
D 24.72
A 25.68
E 25.84

I've emailed their support a few times over the last couple months without any reply.

I tried them again last night, and I finally got a reply...

G 0.054 in
D 0.067 in
A 0.085 in
E 0.109 in

For comparison, here is what the Velvet Blues were:

Velvet Blue Diameter

G 0.06

D 0.068

A 0.086

E 0.105

So, I was hoping the G specifically would be at least in the 0.058+ range, if not thicker, so that's a little disappointing. Otherwise, maybe worth a try since the tension appears to be very similar to the 25kg Velvet tension and the bronze wrap, synthetic core might produce some similarities.

For anyone else looking for that Velvet Blue replacement, I've so far been really pleased with Zyex Lights. The 0.061 G is really nice and the tension is just a bit more than the Blues.

First of all I dig your playing,you got a big sound and chops,just great...
I 've posted yesterday asking about what is a better choice Red springs metal or the ones you're using,so far no replies...
You said you used Red springs but was it the wrapped in copper D+G set? Or just the plain synthetics for D+G?
So if you can clarify that would help me a lot...
Also,what exactly happened to the Red Springs?

Thanks I appreciate it. I did the metal D and G so they had the copper wrapping around it and are thinner than the synthetic. I loved the sound a lot and honestly I might just go back to them but the galli strings bow better. The red springs wrapping came undone after a year and I tried to get new sets but they came apart when I got them
( bad batch?). I love the sound so much especially with sustain and punch and they are lower tension which helps my bass resonate more. If you check out the yamhiko test I have on my youtube those are done with the red springs metal full set.

Thanks for the reply...Yeah,I was kind of leaning towards the Aquilas...I DID listen to the Yamahiko video soon after I posted this and honestly those sound great too...but maybe the Gallis have a bigger sound,as you say in your video too.
Do you remember if you got the 16's E and A from Aquila? Or the 22's?
Would you say the Gallis are stiffer/harder to play than the Red Springs?( By the way ,in case you haven't read my post, my dilemma is Aquila Red Springs metal or the Gallis light-bronze wrapped.)
And whatever you have to say on the matter,I am interested! I am in a Lafaro/Peacock/Gomez trip for the last few years and I am looking for maximum expressiveness,air with fundamental in my sound...Also easy playability in thumb position...
I am all ears!

Personally I love the aquilas more. They are less stiff on my bass and more punch and more sustain i feel but could be a little thinner in sound depending on whose listening but they are brighter as well. I used the 16's. The aquilas do roll under the finger a little. The galli have thicker lower strings. I feel like aquilas are more scott lafaro/ eddie gomez, and the galli are like chuck israel/gary peacock. You can message me if you want more info i went down a huge rabbit whole with these.

Yes. I ordered a set of galli last summer and it took two months to arrive. When I emailed them a couple of weeks after the order I was told that in Italy everyone goes on vacation for the summer and I would have to wait. There was no explanation of this when I submitted my order and payment. While awaiting the set I stumbled on a set of Temperas for a bargain price and put them on and they're still on. The galli are sitting unopened.

I tried the Red Springs about a year ago hoping they'd be a replacement for Velvet Blue and Anima...I don't know if I kept getting bad batches or if it was user error, but 3 G strings and 2 Ds all either broke or unraveled on me during or soon after the install process, so I gave up and moved on.


Have you had any similar issues? I wonder if their quality control has improved or if they've done anything to improve the construction quality.

The first batches were wound with nylon but they switched to metal and this solved the problem, if I'm not wrong.

I had the metal wound D and G Red Springs. They all unwound or broke…I tried 3 times with the same results each time. I followed their installation instructions and never had this issue with other strings. I never figured out if I was doing something wrong or if there was a major quality issue.

Here's pictures of the issues I had with the metal G Red Springs. It unraveled at the bridge and nut and broke on one of the attempts. The same happened with the D.

The unraveling started before I was even close to standard pitch. I was at least 2 whole steps flat when I noticed the unraveling starting. This bass has a 40.5inch string length, so string tension should not have been an issue.

One thing noted on the instructions that I was not able to 100% follow, was not having ANY of the wrap go around the tuning peg, only the silk. On some of the strings, that is not possible, as the string requires more winding around the tuning peg than there is silk.

Both Gollihur and Aquila sent replacements…I tried 3 times with the same result each time. Mimmo and Aquila didn’t really have an answer as to what the issue was, so I moved on. I’ve been using Zyex lights since then.

From looking at your bridge it seems that the top of it is flat as well as the bridge grooves.
The edge of the bridge where the string is bent cuts into the string and the string cannot slip (easily) over the bridge crown.
I recommend rounding the top of the bridge towards tailpiece and fingerboard as well as the bridge grooves, so that there is no edge than can hinder the slipping of the strongboxes the bridge. And checking the width and depth of the grooves and lubricating them with graphite (I use the softest pencil that I can get in a specialized store) is important too.
Looks like your bridge was already catched and moved by the string because the angles of the string on both sides of the bridge are very different.

But I have no explanation for the stretched windings in front of the nut.
