Double Bass Galli BSN920 L-Synthetic & Bronze

Here's pictures of the issues I had with the metal G Red Springs. It unraveled at the bridge and nut and broke on one of the attempts. The same happened with the D.

The unraveling started before I was even close to standard pitch. I was at least 2 whole steps flat when I noticed the unraveling starting. This bass has a 40.5inch string length, so string tension should not have been an issue.

One thing noted on the instructions that I was not able to 100% follow, was not having ANY of the wrap go around the tuning peg, only the silk. On some of the strings, that is not possible, as the string requires more winding around the tuning peg than there is silk.
This same thing just happened to me with these strings. They were not on longer than five minutes and the windings broke in various places on both. Emailed Mimmo - no response.

They appear to have a quality or design issue with the metal windings. I wonder if they are working on any improvements as these seem like interesting strings, especially for those who miss Velvet.

Too bad their customer support is so bad!

It’s really a shame because from what I could tell before they fell apart I think I would really like them!
I agree. They seemed to be the closest thing to the Velvet Anima or Blues that I have tried. It would be great if we could get ahold of Mimmo or someone at Aquilla that could listen to our feedback and get some input from them.

I finally heard back from Aquila. They want photos of my strings and are going to send new ones.
That’s good to hear. I also went through that process w them and Golligur, totaling in 3 attempts with fresh G and Ds. Each time I had the same experience with the windings.

I was never able to get an answer from Aquilla on what specifically the issue was other than them saying to follow their installation instructions more closely.

You are not giving me much hope

The nut often has a sharp edge on the pegbox side where the string might be catched. I round the groove a bit downwards (and file the nut a bit lower on the top side so the grooves are not too deep there.
This is never a problem with steel core strings but more sensitive strings might survive better with a softer bending.

I tried the Red Springs about a year ago hoping they'd be a replacement for Velvet Blue and Anima...I don't know if I kept getting bad batches or if it was user error, but 3 G strings and 2 Ds all either broke or unraveled on me during or soon after the install process, so I gave up and moved on.

Have you had any similar issues? I wonder if their quality control has improved or if they've done anything to improve the construction quality.
It has happened twice. I had those strings for a year and then when I got a new set that's when it broke twice. I really loved the strings so I hope it gets fixed

Both Gollihur and Aquila sent replacements…I tried 3 times with the same result each time. Mimmo and Aquila didn’t really have an answer as to what the issue was, so I moved on. I’ve been using Zyex lights since then.
Can you please tell us how you like the zyex compared to the Aquila from a sound, feel and string tension perspective? Do they sound as gut like?

I don't want to hijack the thread, but do the red spring synthetic nylon wrapped have the same problem? also about these galli strings, I'm interested in them but I really like a thicker than typical steel g-string. is this g-string thicker than say your typical metal string, spirocore etc?
