Galli Synthesis Strings (Chrome flats on nylon core)

I like clanky attack and quick delay for ABG. Looking for synthetic core flats for a sub short scale (27”) and wondering if the Galli synthesis chromes would work. But I think I would need something for that odd scale. Do the gauges increase in the shorter scale lengths? Did you order direct from Galli?

Well, I have no knowledge/experience with shorter-scales (I think @HaphAsSard and @steve_rolfeca might steer you better with details) But about the Galli Synthesis I can say they have some of the shortest decay (on my bass) of all the sets Ive tried. I will add they DO have something very special in the attack—its authoritative and 'bold' but not aggressive. Very nice IMO.

As for 'clanky', you can get that with any string with a lower setup or more flexible string. I found these strings to be relatively (and surprisingly) stiff for a synthetic core, so theres some latitude to adjust your setup. I didn't keep them installed more than the settle-in time, maybe they evolve and loosen up over time, IDK—I just couldnt get past the quick decay to find out.


About using the Longscale on shorter basses: These low B and E strings are THICK and stiff— I had to use spacers to get the wrap just right on my tuner peg (see above posts). I can't see using these on a shorter mensure. *IF they make a shorter scale 30" set, you could possibly "add a spacer"? ...but 3" is alot to makeup for in length. You may be better off with 650mm or 700mm sets tuned for Bass (E1) but flats (and LowB if desired) are hard to come by without a thorough search. —plmk if you find any

I got mine thru BassdirectUK. My personal experience with them was not positive (see above posts) and I wouldn't necessarily reorder form them. Galli direct would be my next order. If you're in US, try contacting Matt at StringsByMail. (they may not have them in stock, but they have been very helpful in the past about ordering set as a US distributor.)

How did these strings work with the Lace pickup? What did you think of the Lace in general?

I didn't try the Galli with the Lace as I'm quite taken with the LaBella Copper-Whites and not really interested in swapping them out -just yet . And the LACE pup is hard to mount on my bass due to its thumb rest—so not ideal for a test.

The LACE pup is just a "regular mag pup" so all the online EB demos online will give you an idea of the Galli sound with a mag pup. (see early post with EB Youtube clip)

In general, I thought the LACE was a 'nice idea' especially as a backup or alternative pickup for stage use. But in all practicality, it would depend of your bass' build/setup. the pup low clearance is good but I could only fit it "by the bridge" (not the tone I prefer with a mag pup). see pic below...



The LACE pup (on loan to me from @Bassinthemudd) offered a consistently strong signal with a variety of string sets. I measured it at 17KΩ, and found it very similar to a guitar bridge humbucker in both load and tone. I imagine if you have a traditional "acoustic guitar soundhole" this pickup could be a great substitute for an undersaddle pup when mounted 'into/across' the soundhole.

I have a Lace that I don't use much...pretty electric sounding. Just wondering if these strings had any less output with a mag than a traditional type string. Ill check out some of those youtube EB clips.

Is your 27"-scale ABG either the Alvarez MSB1 or the Journey OB660G1? Or is it another model?

Anyway:
if you read the posts above, you'll find answers to all your questions. Most importantly, that the Galli are long-scale only, but there is a set - with gauges roughly the same as the BEAD subset of the Synthesis flats - made for ukulele basses, and also available in a slightly longer version that could fit some guitar-scale acoustic bass guitars, but unfortunately not yours: said longer version has only 26.5" winding length, ball to start of taper.

[If I'm not mistaken, the new Aquila Flat Spirals aren't available for your scale length either, but a double-check won't hurt.]

Correct it’s for the journey carbon fiber ABG. Needed something that can handle the Florida beach/outdoors yet remain portable. I normally play extra long scale(Dingwall and a custom 36” scale bass) so I’m used to hunting for odd sizes.
any who, I always hated typical round wound phosphor bronze ABG strings. The exception is the thomastic version(uses nylon core). So I’m looking for nylon core strings that will fit, rounds or flat. 27” is too long for ukulele bass (20”-22”)and too short for normal 30” short scale.
today I ordered the La Bella Silverbacks, designed to fit the 25” Goldtone microbass. These are silver round wounds over a nylon core. Those are only $18 so it’s worth the risk.

Good choice, IMO. Unless you move them on and off instruments very often, nyloncore roundwounds should have no problem being wound untapered on tuning posts on shorter-than-intended scale platforms. Only, the .115" might require some jury-rigging, depending on the size of the post (either filing the post slot wider, or flattening the string in order to fit the former).

Yeah these strings are Nylon wound in Metal like the Bass Strings of a Classical Guitar set but they work amazingly well w/ Magnetic Pickups because of the Magnetic Wrap wire.
