Gallien Krueger 800rb help?!

Really? Please explain.
I've had nothing but excellent results in the few times I've had to deal with them.

The only time my 800RB went down in twenty two years, my tech ordered a part to fix the boost circuit. Had it in less than a week.
Then, after Katrina, my amp was soaked in salt water, mud, and all kinds of deplorable matter. Sent it to G-K and within a few days they called to say it was fixed. Charged a small bench fee and had it back to me in under two weeks.

If you have a legitimate gripe, I suggest you PM RAG (Robert A. Gallien) here on TalkBass. I've seen him intervene for players here numerous times.

My main amp is the 800RB
Sorry to inform you, but you MIGHT need a cap replacement job done.
I can't explain why taking the nut off the jack helped, but it bad caps would DEFINITELY explain the rest of the symptoms.
I had mine recapped and it was a whole new world of awesomeness when I got it back.

I can tell you with about 99.9% sureness, it isn't a bad filter cap. I've been repairing amps for over twenty five years and this most likely ain't that. My guess is that he has either a bad input jack or FX return jack (contacts sprung), bad solder joint/s in the preamp or power section (very common on these amps) or broken pots...very common too on these where the pot is smacked on the front of the amp and it actually cracks the phenolic on the pot.

This is an easy fix for an experienced tech. He shouldn't charge more than an hour's labor for this job.

Another way to check and see if it is your FX loop is simply plug a guitar cord from the FX out to the FX return and see if problem goes away...if it does than you know its in the FX loop (jacks, most likely).

Kyle, do you have a way of taking a clear picture of the pot and posting it here? I may have one in my parts bin that I can donate to the cause (I have hundreds of pots). It's been a while since I've worked on a GK800RB so I don't remember what the pots look like...there are literally dozens of styles of pots used on instrument amps.
