Interesting. I use a pedal board, mostly for a Broughton HPF, but also a SansAmp Bass Fly Rig, which DI I run to the foh if there is one. I could just use that... Forgot about that, but am interested in the amp's capabilities.

Oh well, you've got lots of options considering all that I just thought with respect to getting the signal from the DI in back to to separate inputs.
I'm about to trade for a 1001rb ii, and i'm wondering if you can run it with no load? I generally practice with a direct out to my focusrite, into my computer and monitor with headphones through the focusrite. Will this be possible with this head without either a load or with the output muted, or speaker volume at zero? is DI volume relative to output cabinet volume or can master volume be at zero and i can still get signal to the DI out? The manual states that the amp will run just fine without a load, but i've always thought that only class D amps were capable of that?

That is still of interest, just concerning knowing the ins and outs of this machine. But I do see there is also a way to do it otherwise.

You should have no issue.
There are know issues with tube based power amps with no load. Lack of a load on a transformer coupled tube amplifier will cause voltage to feedback, spiking to develop in the output transformer and it prone to causes damage to the amp. It's can blow tubes and cause shorts anywhere vulnerable in the circuit.
I'm buying an RB series head for small/medium sized gigs, is the 400RB really as loud as people say it is? I'll be playing into a 4 ohm Genz Benz neo 2x12 and I love the sound of the amp cranked so I think the 700 might be overkill.
A 1001rbii [paired w/ a 212] is part of my big rig and even on the loudest stages it has room to spare.
You should be fine w/ a 400rb. I should probably be using a 700rb.
It really depends on the volume of your band. Sixteen years ago I had a 400RB 210 combo that just barely kept up to a 2 guitar band. Maybe we were too loud. I went to the 700RB-II which was night and day. Overkill could also be looked at as having headroom and flexibility. The 700RB-II was my favorite out of all the RB-II heads. And I owned them all at one point or another.
For context, I'm competing against a cranked DSL40 and hard hitting drummer. Loud, but no guitar stacks or anything. Sounds like the 400 will be good
I just got an 800RB, and for my semi-rowdy club/biker bar band I think it's a little too much. Still deliberating though...
But, I think a 400RB would suit me fine.
Agree w the 400RB assessment. In that the premise is running at 4 Ohms. I had a 400 RBIII
115 combo I had to add a 115 BLX to handle medium size gigs 240w @ 4 Ohms, which
sounded great. The 1001RBII w 700w @ 4 Ohms is incredibly loud and has to be pushed to that level to get the GK tone. In essence the 700RBII's 480w is exactly in the Goldilocks Zone to cover 90% ofwhat you'll ever need with or without FOH. .02.
Man, an Orange Terror 15 or 30 watt amp at half volume is loud enough lol - silly guitarists.
Depends on how much clean headroom or pushed grind you need and what volume you play. More power, more clean room at volume. Less power, more pushed grind at volume. If you play loud and need clean headroom, the 400 may not get you there.

Ok, a quick RB series review question: to get that "Hitting the rails" thing, does one crank the Master and adjust the preamp gain for volume, or does one crank the preamp gain and adjust volume with the Master?
