Gallien Krueger Club. GK Rules !

Simple question: Why does the manual for the GK 1001RB & MB150E/S-112 advise you to set the Woofer Master & Master, respectively, at 12 Noon? Granted, with my MB150E-112 Master at 12 noon I can barely get past 8 AM on the Gain. Is this a GK thing of some sort? Thx.
For a cleaner sound on my guitar amps I max the master out.

Hi! How do you compare the Legacy with the 700RB? Do you find a bit redundant having both of them? I have a 700rb II, I never played a legacy but looking at the features and demos it seems to me that you can achieve the same (or pretty similar) results with both, am I missing something? The overdrive circuit on the legacy is nice by the way!
Thank you
The Legacy 800 weighs less, has more power, is 2-ohm capable, and *can* sound very similar to the 700RB-II. It also has an aux in and headphone out, for silent practice.

The Legacy’s basic sound, though, has more midrange - and I find that I needed to cut the Legacy’s mids and some highs to get them to occupy the same place in the mix as the 700RB…but the Legacy has a clarity that the 700RB couldn’t reach.

I’m not a fan of the overdrive circuit for an *obvious* overdriven sound; I like it much better with drive and edge low, then level set to be equal to the basic tone.

Used that way, it’s like the 700RBs boost, but with a lot more control.

After 2 years of using the Legacy exclusively, I sold my 700RB-II; I was only holding onto it for nostalgia.

I max the master on 800RB with mudbucker/Sidewinder basses and it absolutely enables a neck mudbucker to play clean and the hi boost and EQ in general works outstanding 👌.

That is why the 800RB is legendary the EQ setup and preamp and drive are extremely flexible for a wide range of basses...brilliant amps!

I've noticed an interesting thing about this with the Legacy amps that I've demoed. With the Legacy 800, I encountered the same observations as yours, i.e. not using it as an obvious or typical overdrive but a lower settings to achieve the character of the boost function on the older GK amps. However, a local shop to me had a used Legacy 1200 and when I was playing through that, I found the overdrive circuit to have a lot more usable range even when adjusting to higher drive and edge settings. It never really got buzzy or burley like I observed on the 800. Just added more grunt or grind to the overall tone. I'm assuming this could obvious due to the power ratings but I'd assume that the overdrive characteristic would be the same across all of the Legacy amps. Or this could have been a situational observation or maybe my unfamiliarity in setting these amps (user error).

I will agree that those backline amps don't get enough love. I have several as well as a goldline and a couple rb's. Those backlines are no joke, and you can always find a few at the closest music go round.
I’ve had RB’s like the 400 and 700 RB-IIi. Is the backline the exact same amp but without the second biamp?

Or is there a difference in the sound and quality?

I believe the backline is a Chinese made equivalent of the 400rb, with no bi amp, and a drive channel. I haven't had a 400rb, but my backline amps are very similar to my 700rb-ii in tone.
I'm sure some others here have more insight into their origin than I.

I have had both a BL600 AND the 400RB-IV. I traded the BL600 in to get the 400RB-IV. I noted no difference in sound quality, besides the obvious lack of a drive channel. My 400RB-IV does not have bi-amp capability, and to my knowledge, I don't think any of them did. I believe that was an 800RB and up feature, and in the more modern amps, a 700RB and up feature. Either way, a BL600 and 400RB-IV are basically identical in my experience. I "upgraded" to the RB only because I liked the aesthetics more, already had a 700RB-II, and wanted to keep my knob settings etc. as close to identical as possible between amps.
Bob Gallien himself has posted that the Backline 600 is basically a 400RB with a little
more wattage and apparently is a decent deal.

My 400RB amps don’t have bi-amping built in but my 800RB does.
This 100%. Backline series is essentially Chinese-made RB series. And if memory serves, QC for the Backlines was done in China and in the US, so they should be solid amps overall.

Anyone else? I'll contact GK, I guess.

I didn't know these specifics, but agreed that the BL are great amps. There was a BL 600 in a practice space I used to have. It sounded every bit GK as any other GK amp I've used. I loved it.

Here's what I received from GK.
I always maxed out my Master Volumes to get a cleaner sound on bass & guitar amps both tube or solid state. I guess is was wrong!?

The 12 o'clock setting is just a setting that is not going to limit volume and not so high that it increases the amps noise floor at lower/moderate volumes. You will run it higher when you need maximum output volume and can run it lower for low volume.

@Nine-and-three-Quarters

…and here’s your answer, direct from GK:

“These were in certification way longer than expected so it's been a moving target up to now. However, they were just approved but it held up the parts ordering just in case a change was required that would make them unusable or needing modification. We are projecting the first units will go into production in December, which is what Sweetwater have on their site. Being the first run, it will not go as fast as a current model so it is likely they will be begin landing at dealers in January. All orders will be filled in the order we received them so anybody that got them on order early will get priority. ”

Who gives customer service responses on a Sunday at 8am?

This just makes their amps and cabs sound a little bit better in my ears..
Hey Bass Brother,

Have you or anyone for that matter heard anymore news on the release of the new Legacy amps? Sweetwater's date says March but you know how that goes. Need some definite insider info. Thanks

Good morning my GK loving friends.

Just spreading a bit of the love on this Saturday morning.

Fusion 550 into the Neo 210/115 stack brings huge bottom end. love this rig.

have a great weekend everyone.

Wow! What a sweet rig. I really loved the Fusion 550 when I was looking for a new amp a while back. I tried out all of GK's options as a local shop had a huge selection. I was smitten with the 550 but was really going after the compactness of the smaller MB amps but the 550's impressions stayed with me.

it is a heavyweight by today's standards but there is something about the big tone i get from that weighty case that makes me smile whenever i play through it. it's not the rig i typically use when i play out but it is the one i use at home the most. if we get a nice outdoor gig this summer, i'll bring this one to hear it stretch it's legs a bit.
