Gallien Krueger FX loop problem!?!?!?

Ok heres the deal, today I swapped out my DBX 266lx for a DBX 160a, I run the compressor in the effects loop of my GK 1001RB-II....Today I think that I have discovered a problem that I have had for a while but didn't realise till today :crying:

When I swapped out the DBX for the new one, I noticed a large decrease in my amps volume...At first I thought it was the leads,so I changed the leads but still no difference, then I bypasses the DBX...but still I had a decrease in volume.

At first I thought that my new DBX 160a was faulty so I swapped it out again for my 266lx but... still I was getting a decrease.

Each time, as soon as I pull the leads out the FX loop I get back my normal volume...its really strange.

Since I have ruled out the compressor(s) and the 4 different leads a went through...I know think that it could be a problem with my GKs FX loop.

OK, so I have tried some of my other pedals through the GK FX loop and they all seem to work fine with no decrease in volume when they are bypassed....that means I can rule out there being any problems with my amps FX loop.

So why is this problem with volume happening only on my the 2 DBX compressors that I have tried...

Please help!

Do you have at least one xlr to 1/4" cable? That way you can eliminate the possibility that there is a problem with either your 1/4" in and the 1/4" out on the compressor!

Usual rule of thumb is the compressor comes between the bass and input of amp. I would try that, and run your effects through the loop. I have the 1001RBII and I never had that issue. Also take advantage of the tuner out jack, nice to not to have your tuner in your signal chain.

I was always recommended to run the compressor through the effects loop....I can make up the volume with the output gain on both compressors its just when I bypass them that it goes really low...then I have to take the Return lead out and I get a boost in volume...its a really strange problem.

I will try running the bass straight into the DBX but I would much rather it was in the FX loop.

You are better off with the compressor in the fx loop if it is a rackmount unit. Pedals go into the amps frontside input. This is my rule-of-thumb method, although ymmv.

That said, I would agree that you are having some sort of level setting issue, wether it be a pad switch or a level knob not getting cranked like it needs to be.

The best way to check your effect loop is to take a standard instrument cord and plug the send directly to the return. It should sound the same both ways.
