Gallien-Krueger MB2-500: Part II

Alright, I have a bizarre question for rag or Brian.

My A00 has issues (very rarely) with interference from radio stations, but I love the EQ on mine, as opposed to updating entirely, do I just need to take it to a service center and have that fixed, or is there something else I need to do? Also, will they charge me for this, or not?

Can you talk a little bit more on why you think that? The GK is the only lightweight head I have'nt tried, and I do have a Shuttle 6.0. I've also tried the Carvin and The Markbass LM ll. Carvin so far seems the best bang for the buck.

Sorry to take so long to respond, haven't checked this thread in a while. By no means did I mean to slam the Genz Shuttle. First off, I only did an a/b on Epifani PS series cabs b/c they are what I play and like. As everyone knows, certain heads/cabs just match up better. At least through these, I found the GK to be much fuller and fatter. The Shuttle seemed to need alot more eq to get it sounding good. Flat it sounded kind of thin to me. Could just be the cab match though, I bought a 1001RBII to run my PS410 and I went through about 6 heads at the store in comparison. I think the GK and Epifani PS lines just match up nicely.

You could try one of these.

Okay, I've gone through most of the post here and I still have one major concern, how well can this thing take a beating?

I'm not talking abuse mind you but can this thing handle being pushed for an average of thirty hours a week without serious issues? I am familiar with one unit in particular that puts in a good 40 hours a week but it's not pushed very hard. It's run at 25 to 30% thru a 4 ohm cab. I have a buddy that is seriously interested in the product but is afraid to pull the trigger on purchasing one because of the demand that he puts on his equipment. So when I say 30 hours, I mean hard core solid playing at substantial volumes kinda work.

In the time I had my MB2 500, it failed twice on a gig, after only an hour. The issue was thermal cutout. The GK boys were great, and swapped the unit out with a mod to the thermal cutout (it looked like they moved it away from the heatsink a little). IMHO I think they tried to put too much into too small an enclosure, there is very little room in there for air movement over the power amp heatsinks, and the fan only comes on when needed. I still have concerns about the ability of this little amp to do heavy duty, and I would never take it to a gig without a backup. Having said all of that the latest revisions (A05 I believe) seem to have few if any documented issues here.

I think this is a case of no news is good news? If they could not stand up to it, somebody would post it!:D

I guess you're right about that one! I really dig this little monster, moreso than any of the other "super mini's" on the market. My buddy is head over heels about it, but doubt is doubt.

I will be purchasing one for myself soon. FWIW, It is what I'm really missing. I need somthing powerful, potent and PORTABLE! I really don't have anything that I feel like lugging around for practices. This w/ 2 1x12 cabs would fit the bill perfectly!

I run mine with 2 1x12 cabs and LOVE it!

Email Brian, we can update it and leave the EQ alone. The EQ update is really very mild.

Shoot me an email to [email protected] and we will take care of the RFI issue and leave the EQ alone. -Brian

I've gigged my A05 now for about 3 weeks (30 sets)
the other night, 1st set, it kept shutting down did this about 5 times
the amp was not hot
I had the boost on, -10 engaged, gain 12:00 / boost 10:00 master 12:00
EQ flat Bass rolled off to 11:00 and contour off
4ohm cab

I turned the boost off, rolled the bass off a little more and turned my overall volume down :(
it didn't turn off the rest of the night, but I lost my balls...

blues gig the next day it was fine 3 sets

I'll be calling GK to see what's up...

That is bad news, I don't think I could afford to have something that unreliable, even for practice that would be painful. A05 as well...:(

I talked to Brian at GK (awesome CS)
We concluded that:
the source of power could have been weak, causing the internal protection to kick in,
he said that maybe I was pushing the amp too hard (even though it was cool to the touch) and it wasn't getting enough power to run properly
I've played this amp at 3 other places without problems so my next step will be
calling the Bar owner and asking him if he's had past problems with power...
He also recommended a power conditioner
