Gallien Kugger Vs - ?

Can anyone give me an opinion on this>

I'm using a 3/4 upright into a Gallien-Kruger 800RB >100w high into a new Gallien 2x10 and a horn cab, and 300w low into a old gallien 15 inches spk cab. (using a Fishman Full Circle Pickup with no pre-amp)

Just can't cut through the guitar and drum!

Q is, Should i sell all that gallien for a better amp set up? Or adding a pre amp would solve this somewhat

What does Lee Rocker use?

The Upright competes in the mix against the drums and a Gretsch pre amped in a re-301 into a 63 Fdr Bassman which seems to be perfectly balanced between them. I seem to not have enough PWR to join their perfect mix

get a preamp in general, i think that this is your main problem is that there isn't enough gain from the pickup itself.. the input signal is very low.. with a preamp, you can control the amount of input gain..

the 800RB should be more than enough to cut through the mix..

you will need to do something about the F-Holes, though.. at a higher gain, you might start to feedback..

Hi Throbgod13, I just bought a K&K rockabilly slap kit from BobGoliuhr on e-bay. Can't wait to try it and hear the difference. Thanks a lot to re-assure my feelings towards the 800RB, i was having serious doubt about it.

I agree about the 800RB. With that amp, you will reach the point of feedback before you run out of power. If you can't reach that point with the level controls cranked on the head, then you need a preamp with some gain. Note that the 800RB has 1 MegOhm input impedance, so a preamp won't dramatically improve your tone, but with some gain, it might help you run your amp at closer to its full power.

the more power the better... Try a 1001 RB and if it doesn't still float your boat, go with something completely different. I really think that the most important volume factor can be the cabinet sometimes.

Band Rehearsal tonight, just back. my RB with the master to 3/4, 100w high open to 3/4 into a GK 2x10 & a horn, 300w low open to 3/4 into a GK cab w/a 15inch, the boost level open 1/3, the 10db pad off. the contour off/on/on with the EQ's about 12am on all / Still can't cut through (still just with the piezo pick-up in the bridge, as i have not yet receive the K&K RB yet)

As i mentioned attop, I'm competing in the mix with a 1963 50w bassman like Mr.Setzer with the volume set on 5 to 6 and bright, fed by a re-301 at 50% in/out. I figure a total 30w. We play rockabilly/swing, and as loud as our loud drummer plays naturally (unmiked)..the Gretsch is not over powering the drummer.

Could my power amp be blown while still getting some sound from the pre-amp section of the RB?

Hello Seth, What amp do you use?

I look at a lot of players and seems the overall amp of choice is Ampeg. I would have like to try one, my local stores are too small and don't carrie the line

Try playing a bass guitar with your rig and compare. My guess is the output from your upright is lower.

I agree with the others that the 800RB is very powerful. I've played many large venues with mine and had headroom to spare.

You can run both your low and high master wide open so as not to limit the output stage of the power amp. Also, use your boost as well.

The tonal properties of a string bass make it more difficult to cut through a loud mix but this rig should be as good as any if all components are working properly.
