What would go with the Gamut G-D. Garbo regular or the less tension version on the A String.....

The regular matches up just fine, I've never tried the lights. I used to use a Garbo A and an Anima E. I didn't really love the Garbo E so much. I had a set on a bass once that was Gut G, Garbo A&D (Garbo D is great, not bowable though) and Anima E. That was a good combination.

    Bobby,
How bowable is the Garbo A, I will probably stick with the Anima E as well..

+1 for sticking to regulars. I've had the regular Garbo E/A paired up with Lenzner G/D on two basses, and they balance great.

yup. Garbo E/A Gamut D/G. I love the Garbo E. The hugest sounding E I've tried yet on my bass. I like Animas but the Garbos sound a little more gutlike to my ears.

After a month with the Garbos with the Gut G, I really like the set except for the Gut G, which is too thin. The lower strings are huge, and the D is pretty decent. I'm thinking if I go back to a Gamut G I'll be pretty happy.

The Garbo gut is not horrible it just sucks at blending. HUGE volume drop off.

After almost a year, have gone back to the Anima E. to replace the Garbo E. I have found the Anima gives a more focused sound with clarity, that I was missing. It seems to blend better, with the other strings Garbo A,Gamut D-G.I am happy with this set up most of the time until I take the plunge with the Sonores strings:cool:

I found the exact opposite - I have had that set for a while now and I was really surprised that while the gut G looks startlingly different - the sound fits perfectly well with the other strings and I love playing the G, as it is as bassy as the other strings.

Well, it has the Gut thick sound but I'm finding it a relatively mediocre quality gut string compared to the Gamut I used to have and the Dgulocki I played before. It's not horrible but to me it is the weakest of the set.....listening back to some gig recordings confirmed it is just not as strong, especially past the octave, which is not the norm for this bass with gut. Almost the complete opposite of the Oliv it replaced as a matter of fact.

Feels good though, and not bad enough I feel like I absolutely have to take it off right away. If so I'd put back on the Oliv which has plenty of life left.

Well ... to be honest, I don't play past the octave, that much! :p

Funny thing...took this bass to a big band rehearsal that I don't take an amp to and had one guy from each section (sax. trumpet, bones) come up to me after and ask what was different. All 3 basically said the same thing that they could hear me very well and the sound was good.

I did notice the G wasn't bothering me as much. Maybe it is finally settling in.

I still suspect I'd like the Gamut better with it, but for now I'm going to stick with what I've got as it seems to be making folks happy.
