Garage band interface advice

WOW :hyper: I just found a firepod on the Dallas Craigslist. AND.....hes willing to barter for electrical work. YePi ! He just happened, to be needing an electrician.

FYI. I went with the Line 6 tonepro UX2.. after about 20 minutes of downloading "updates," (and I use a fast connection) I finally got it working. It's okay... thats all I will say about it right now. Input gain seems wayyyyyy low. I'm playing through with an Ibanez SR506.. into my G4 powerbook. Haven't tried firing up garageband with it yet, just using the interface itself. but the gain again, seems wayyyy low. Even with the bass's tone pots on full, its barely pinging the vu's. I'm gonna start a seperate thread and see if anyone else has used this before. Thanks again for the info. Stranger0 I'm definitely interested in what you are doing with the presonus stuff. I'm going to upgrade to a new iMac. I'll let you know how that goes.

I have one as well (UX2).
It's OK. I've used it with Garage Band and I seem to have the same issue- low gain.
And if you crank it, it distorts. Anyone else use it or can tip me off on this??

On the surface, it seems to be pretty cool. I think I may look elseware after the new year.

(BTW- off topic here, I may be selling a older MOTU2408 with PCI card and a MAC G4 dual 500- look in the classifides in a few weeks)

I've found this to be true as well. Usually I run the audio outs into a mixer and run that in to my interface (M-AUDIO - Audiophile 2496) so my gain comes after the Toneport. But when I do use the USB interface I find I will often use the +18 boost located right by the output meters, then you will find you have to roll back your gain significantly which can make input monitoring a little dicey. That glitch is my biggest complaint about the unit but otherwise it's a good interface. It's tempting to use the compressor to make up for your gain loss but the tone gets digitally peaked.

I'd say mac book over an Imac, at least you can be portable.

LOL. The goal is to have a knowledable person record me, because Im not that good at mixing and editing.

I have been studying further, and everyone says the presonus firepod works flawlessly with garage band. So......

Im going to stick with that, and get the IControl board (External controle just for garage band) That way, I dont even have to touch my laptop.

Don't fret about touching the laptop, honestly, it's not as intimidating as you think and honestly, you're about to become more intimate with it than you know.

I come from a Windows background and I know very little about mac's but just due to the way I am (a nosey person who can't seem to stop learning) I went and got a mac book pro, interface, tried it all out, got used to it and hey, I can record.

I basically went from not really knowing anything to actually knowing a little something in the span of 3 months. I started with GB, was happy with it, Logic is 100 times better.

My belief about recording in general prior to this is all about 1 thing, balance. If your band is responsible enough when it comes to volume, then you shouldn't have a problem mixing the band and the audio clashes should be minimal.

Think about where you may want to take this because if you want to get decent at it one day, then invest now in some decent equiptment and start learning. Once you get used to this, you'll kick yourself for not taking a leap of faith. GB is not far off from Logic at all.

My biggest problem right now is that everyone else sounds great, my bass sounds like **** lol

I got my firepod yesterday. Decided to not use garage band, but the cubase that came with it.

I have pod synched to computer and cubase software uploaded. I tried opening a session, but got confused. Do you have to have a template or something ? I'll study more tommorow. I didnt mess with it that much.

You don't need a template, you just need to start a project and start adding tracks. There's an add audio track option off of one of the top menus and from there, assuming you've got your software configured properly for your interface, you can choose which channel runs to which track.

All audio programs that I've used so far generally work the same with interfaces.

Start a blank project
Add x tracks to the project
- set up each track to the corresponding input
Record

Presonus should have a tutorial on their website somewhere.

Honestly, start with garage band, may be a bit easier to feel your way around other programs.

p.s. love that rack you've got there.

Ok...I have my PC rather than my Mac version of cubase in front of me right now...

You definitely want "New Project"

Then in the "project" menu pick "Add Track" -> Audio.

Once you have added all the tracks, expand their height so you can see all the buttons on the left hand side, and use those controls to pick the channels/inputs. Get your 'master' levels window open and the shuttle window happening and you should be good to check levels and record (make sure you have each channel 'activated').

OK, I just got my 1st track on pod going. (my drum machine) Record enabled, I see a signal level :hyper:

Now, if I can figure how to enable my direct out tracks.

Main reason I got this pod was for recording 5 tracks at once.
2 direct outs from stereo Roland V-bass
2 direct outs from DRY amp ,out of V-Bass
1 track for drum machine

EDIT: Well I got stuck. I have my device set up. I cant figure how to assign chanels on pod to tracks. Can someone call me, and walk me through it ?
