GAS: As I see it.

I've stopped looking at the Basses for sale section of the classifieds in favor of the Accessories section.
Less expensive too.

Although in the last month I've bought:
-A pair of real 1978 Jazz Bass pickups
-A loaded Jazz Bass control plate with orange drop cap
-A Musicman bass case.

I just sat down and paid some bills for the month...$,1,200 later, that Teal Lakland 44-60 isn't as appealing - even if it's a nice price and what I want (passive 4 string) in a bass.

I'm afraid that at this point in my life (4 year old daughter, 15 month old son who eats like a teen already, a house, a new van, etc. etc.) my next bass might have to be a Squier. Fortunately, they are nice basses, and if they didn't say Squier I probably wouldn't think twice about playing them.

"Buying stuff is easier than practicing."

Actually, my last bass purchase was to make my practicing and playing easier. I could never quite come to grips with my MIM Fender 5 string. Always felt like I was fighting it and found it hard to make some things flow. It's a great bass and while I've heard others play it with no problem it just wasn't the one for me. I had GAS for anything that made it easier for me to play.

Bought an Ibanez SR505 this past summer. Things that I had been fighting to play were suddenly effortless. No need to GAS over another 5 string.

However (and I will admit) that for some reason I've been toying and somewhat GAS-ING for an Epiphone Viola bass. Played one a few weeks ago and it was fun. Even though it doesn't cost that much I keep asking myself if this is something that I really, really need and the answer is always no, I don't need it. Barely have the time to practice as it is so what the hell do I need another bass for?

Can't justify buying it but I still think about it.

That doesn't sound like GAS to me. You just made a reasonable purchase.

Lol, don't worry the Clement is sticking around! The Fender looks like it's gonna be on the move. I've been selling it on and off since May but I could never bring myself do it. Don't get me wrong, it's the best bass I've ever owned but I think there's something else out there that I'd like more :).

I think the cure for GAS is the right equipment and the knowledge to use it properly.
IE: being satisfied.
Of course, this has nothing to do with boredom or, as I like to call it, recreational GAS!
It is fun to buy new stuff.
The very simple cure for that is being broke.

I think #6. "Impatience, instead of saving," is what gets most people.

I'm adding a #8 to your list. People not trying before they buy and/or not spending enough time playing the instrument in the store before they buy.

I've read too many stories about how people bought a bass on the net and in music stores only to dislike it shortly after their purchase. If people would take the time to play the hell out of it before they make the purchase they would more than likely not gas for something nearly as much. Just IMO of course.

If there is something you like better, what's the rush? Keep your Fender, it's a great bass. If you actuallyrun into something you like better, make a move then!;)

It's a sublimation of instinct in my case.

I have a very present instinct to hunt (preferably other armed humans, but if not at least something to kill and eat).

I have no practical outlet for that that won't get me in trouble. Somehow it has evolved into a search for bargains on stuff in which I bear an interest. I get something I find interesting from someone at their loss. If my buy does not result in a net loss to the seller, I instinctively lose interest. :hmm: I've been taking big bites out of Amazon a lot lately. ;)
