I just got another Gator 4-space shallow rack to stack on another one and they just don't fit well together and it's very unstable.
Anyone else notice this?

Gator rack cases don't stack well?

I notice it much more when the lids are on. When I take them off, they stack better. Never had one fall or anything, so I'm not as nervous now, but like you, I was a bit worried something might happen.
Yup. I have a 6U and used to also have a 4U. Nothing ever fell, but I was always nervous when they were stacked.
Yea. I have a gator case for my amp/tuner/pwr cond, and I don't like how the material its made out of gives so much, the top and bottom of mine is a bit warped from being in the car with other stuff. Whenever I get around to getting a compressor im definitley switching to a Road Ready case. Those things are rock solid.
Had to use two 4U racks at one point and noticed the exact same thing that everyone seems to be echo'ing. They do stack, they're stable, they just aren't as rock solid when stacked as some other competitors such as SKB.
I much prefer Gator to SKB in a single rack (i.e. non-stacked) setting though.

Can anyone recommend a brand that stacks well? I've never actually stacked an SKB. And I'm looking for shallow racks and the reviews on the SKB shallow racks are pretty dismal (something about the back panel being too small).
I'm thinking I still want two cases rather than lugging around an 8-spacer!!!

I have "compatible" racks from at least three manufacturers...not what I would call stable. They slide off of one another with little in the way of provocation. Solved it by putting 1 1/2 inch rubber feet on ALL of my rack cases...no more slip and slide.

I've owned an SKB shallow rack before and the back panel (to me) was the only negative thing I have to say about it. Its just a wimpy back panel design, but at the same time it cuts down on the size/weight of the cabinet. If my gear would fit in a shallow rack I wouldn't stress going back to an SKB despite this flaw.
I've had the same concerns with my SKB cases. Up here in the far north we have "Dollar stores" everything for a buck. There I found rolls of non-slip webbing. Plenty to cut lengths to go between each case and no more slip sliding away. Cue for a song here!
I have no experience with Gator cases but increasing the height of the feet on a SKB case is not such a good idea. They inerlock by bumps and grooves in the top and bottom faces of the cases. The non-slip I use just conforms into these interlocks making them more stable. At a buck a roll you can't get anything cheaper.

I noticed the same thing with mine the first time I stacked one on top of the other. When I placed a foam router pad in between them, they didn't budge. Problem solved for cheap.

So I went with the rubber feet idea. There are these long sections on the cases that seem like they are supposed to interlock with the case above but don't work well. I attached furniture rubber feet pads to them with screws so now the top case has no way of slipping off.
