I'm a long-time lurker on this site, but my recent purchase of a GB shuttle 6.0 (GAS brought on, no less, by the rave reviews posted up here by Dennis and others) has prompted me to post to ask about what cabs you guys might recommend as suitable for use with this head.
Just to give some background on myself, so you have some idea of what kind of sound I like: my main basses are an Alembic Stanley Clarke and a Status Kingbass. For a while I was putting these through a Phil Jones Sixpak and 9B extension cab. This was a great rig - very punchy and powerful, completely transparent sound, but HEAVY. And over time, since both my stage basses are renowned for their clarity and the flatness of response, I began to feel that I needed an amp with a bit of tonal colour, just to warm up the sound a bit. I had acquired an old SWR Workingmans 10 as a practice and 'take-it-on-the-bus-to-get-to-a-coffee-shop-gig'-type amp, and found I really liked the SWR sound. So I ended up trading my Phil Jones gear for an SWR 750 and SWR Bigfoot 2x12 cab. This gave me what I considered a pretty good sound - much warmer at the bottom end, sparkly up top, but, if I'm honest, perhaps lacking a bit of grit in the mids.
But this stuff, especially that 750 head, is still pretty heavy, and since I have two small kids, space is at something of a premium, so I've been looking for something smaller and lighter with a comparable sound. Hence the Shuttle. It arrived here in the UK yesterday and I tried it out in rehearsal last night, running my Alembic through it into the Bigfoot. At first, I have to admit, I was disappointed: the sound seemed a bit boxy and lacking in bottom end. However, I don't know if it was just a case of the thing having to warm up a bit, or me tweaking the eq between each song, by the end of the night it was sounding fantastic. Kind of like the SWR but with more grit and punch in the mids, therefore cutting through the mix a little better. So I reckon I can now safely offload the SWR.
However, I would also like to get rid of the WM10 - the idea being that I use the shuttle with the Bigfoot for bigger venues, and the same head with some nice light small 1x10 cab to do the little gigs around town, as I have been doing with the WM10.
So my question is, which 1x10 have you Shuttle guys found to work well with the head? Ideally, I'd like something that, in combination with the 4lb shuttle, weighs less than the WM10 (about 35lbs - while it's definitely portable, you don't want to have to walk very far with it!) but will pack a bigger punch. The Epifani UL110 has caught my eye, at 22lbs, although I've never heard one - do any of you guys know if this, with the Shuttle, will give me the kind of sound I'm looking for ('SWRish-but-with-more-punch-in-the-mids', I guess)? The EA Wizzy 10 has also been suggested, but I'm a bit concerned about the lack of a tweeter. Anyone out there with real-world experierence of the Shuttle with either of these, or any other similar cabs?
