... The streamliner may be TOO colored & you will have to make sure you're not sending a very HARSH tone to the board to get midrange cut through your cab. IMPORTANT to think about people, trust me. The tone the crowd hears pre-EQ will be VERY different than what comes out of the Streamliner & cab.
Ed, excellent review, once again ! You are really setting the standard for all others !
It would do your review work and video production even more justice, if there were a possibilty to download the HD videos without going through youtube.
Mind, downloading from youtube is not the issue, even I know how to do that..., but youtube somehow compresses the audio to point, where all the sutble differences you are highlighting in your video by cutting forth and back, are barely noticeable, even with good headphones.
I know from my own listening tests that the difference between the Tube and the FET channel are much more distinct than what comes across in the youtube download.
Again, your reviews (and your books) are a pleasure and inspiration !
IMO, it wouldn't make much sense to use a Streamliner and not use the D.I. post EQ. Otherwise, why bother to with the multi-tube preamp? What I mean is that the SL is one of those amps which is "part of the instrument" and a contributor to the overall character of the final bass tone, and, as such, not intended to sound like a "wire straight to the board". As I see it, the whole point of the SL is the fat, "tubey" color it imparts. From what I've heard, the SL's post-EQ D.I. sounds pretty amazing, while the pre-EQ send sounds decent, but unremarkable....
MOST soundmen require Pre-EQ. Your backline tone will be VERY different from the house tone, 99% of the time I run pre-EQ as requested.
The pre/post question is really part of a larger debate.... anyway, I always run pre-EQ an often receive compliments... and no complaints. My use of EQ is sparse and tasteful. Perhaps not surprisingly, I am one of those people who considers the amplification chain to be integral to my electric "instrument'. Sure, my basses sounds fine by themselves... but I've purposely chosen gear which gives me the sound I want to create, and I want that sound out front.
My point is that the SL is a tone color machine - it was designed for "maximum tube flavor". Taking the D.I. pre-EQ negates the purpose of this particular amp.... unless the idea is that the SL's "tube nirvana" is solely for the player and not the audience.![]()
