GC experience.

Several weeks ago I took my 7 year old daughter to GC to play several instruments, mostly drums and piano thats her favorites, shes tired of hearing about bass,lol. We had a blast! During that time I noticed an Ibanez on sale for 199.00, I thought Hmm, nice looking bass and decent price, I didnt buy it but knew Id be back to check it out. Yesterday, I went back to try a few out. Well that particular one was gone but not a big deal. I tried an Epiphone, beautiful bass but the moment I touched it I cringed! The action was way too low, the bass was WAY too twangy for my tatse and the strings were too close together, all fixable issues I suppose but it just didnt feel right. I played a Laguna, it looked really sharp, it sounded ok but felt cheap and also twangy. Of course I played several Fenders (Fender man at heart)but nothing on sale. Then I found another decent looking Ibby, super light weight, nice thin neck, not too twangy but also not on sale. Finally, I spotted a really nice looking burgundy with black hardware Dean. I heard alot of good and bad about Dean, decided to try it and was blown away!! It needed to be tweaked a bit but what an awesome player! Played through a Mark bass Amp. It was on sale for 199.00. I am estatic!!!! An awesome bass at a decent price. Im still a Fender player at heart but I have nothing bad to say about Dean....so far. This was the best GC experience I ever had...and believe me I had it coming. Just had to rave, thanks.

I tried nearly all the Fenders in the place, Jazz's, Squiers, many different variations and set up's, most sounded decent but I wasnt there with the cash for a Fender. Spent another few hours with the Dean today and like it even a bit more.....it cant compare to my MIK Jazz but its sweet all the same and Im hesitant to say it may sound better than my Squier, although the Squier needs new strings and is passive, but the tone on the Dean wins. Can I hear from other Dean players? Pro's / cons, what u like or dont like? Im glad I grabbed it!

I get the feeling that the $200 Ibanez you picked up is the one I bought to teach myself to slap on and have used exclusively ever since.

It's a pretty nice little bass, and great quality for the price.

I thought it would be CombatChuck. I have several friends that endorse Ibanez...bass and guitars, and they always sounded decent. But the one aspect I like the most is how light weight they are. An Ibby is still in my future....especially at those prices but I need to be REALLY impressed. Im a Fender guy but not a gear snob, and would love to own many basses of all the makers so I can judge them for myself. I cant help it!!! Im an instrument (bass) junkie!!! Im not into slap at all but I can appreciate the art of it. While I was at GC that day, at one point a teen came in with his parents, started slapping on a Ibby 6 string.....sounded terrible but I got the feeling the kid was a real beginner and it wasnt the fault of the instrument, so some slack is given. Glad you're happy with that bass.

I loved my ibanez until it came time for repair....... the techs have a hard time getting ahold of Ibanez . Now it's a wall hanger (can't bring myself to part with my first 5er yet). But for the price, great little basses!

I got 5 P basses, love em to death, but I havent sold 4 million records yet so I dont have an endorsement through Fender, Dean approached me and I was unsure at first. I tried out alot of the basses they had and was really impressed with the Q4, Double Bartolini humbuckers and active, completely unlike my pbasses. The tone can be manipulated to just about anything. The only thing I didnt like was the rosewood fb, lucky for me I was able to swap out to a maple one after they sent me my new neck. I highly recommend these Q4's they are definately worth the price. I'm not sure what they go for maybe 600, but they sound incredible. Heres a quick cell phone pic:

That makes me more confident in the buy. One question I have is the brand of pu's. They're just black with no marking, bridge and neck. I would guess 1 1/2x4in. The dude at GC didnt know, he assumes they're just stock Dean pu's. I will research it further when I have time, Im sure Dean has a website yes? And you're right about the tone variables but Im still feeling her out. Could I learn the pu's by serial #?
