GC New bass damage... thoughts?

Crap like this can keep me up at night. However if you like the bass you might take it to a local repair shop to see if the instruments integrity has been compromised. Some of the damage “looks” repairable. If so go back to GC requesting an additional discount. Whatever you u gotta live with it!

I wouldn’t even ask for a further discount I would just return it.

I wouldn’t even consider keeping that one unless it was around half the price of a used one in decent shape, which I wouldn’t expect GC to do so I wouldn’t even ask.

Any suggestions on what I need to do to make sure that I don't get hit with a "wear and tear" charge from GC if I decide to return it altogether?

You won't. For all the faults you can find in GC, their return policy is very lenient and generous. I recently tried ordering 3 different basses from them, and all of them showed up with damage on them from being poorly handled in stores, or mistreated during shipping. No one once questioned if *I* had damaged the bass or anything, and the manager of the store even offered me a 15% discount off anything on the wall to make up for all the back and forth I had to endure.

I know they're not the best company out there, but there are some genuinely good folks that work there that want to do what's best for their customers, even if their ability to do so is somewhat limited being part of a big corporation.

I just received a btb747 from GC. Ordered online... apparently there was only 1 in the entire country that GC had, so they had to ship me one that was sitting in a store. The guy from the store called me and warned me about "shop damage" to it, so I was at least expecting it.

Got the bass today, damage was a bit more than I had expected. See photos.

I'm on the fence about this one. I got an additional managers' discount for the damage; all told (after the already-discounted price I paid + the additional discount) it'll be like $800 for the "new" bass. I'm wondering what other folks might do in this situation.

Second, I'm on the fence about the bass itself. Any suggestions on what I need to do to make sure that I don't get hit with a "wear and tear" charge from GC if I decide to return it altogether?
I would send it back just on the damage to the back of the neck. That would drive me nuts playing it.

If it plays and sound good, keep it. But given that the bass looks sort of flashy anyways, the damage does not add much character the way it might on a more utilitarian bass.

Looks like it fell of the wall or someone "rented" it for a show and returned it.

This is what I do when I buy a bass from our local GC. Before I even plunk down any cash, I'll give it to the guitar tech, and we have an excellent one at our store, has worked as a touring tech with bands like Meshuggah and other metal acts, so he knows what he's doing. He'll check everything out - intonation, any neck issues and fix it before the sale goes through. To me, that's a must when buying a guitar at GC, we're not talking Sweetwater here.

That's too much I think. That mark on the neck looks like you would feel it every time you play. I recently took delivery of a shop damaged Tony Franklin but it was nowhere near what this is. If they try to hit you with a "wear and Tear" charge (which in my experience they will not especially if they already have it noted as shop damaged) tell them where they can stick it and that they can either take the bass back for a full refund or deal with a chrage back on your credit card.

Its a $400 to $500 bass imo.....i could deal with it as long as ALL else is OK.

I honestly dont worry about stuff like this as much as some but think about it.....if you do return it, it has to be resold and to me its worth no more than $500 if that if i saw it in a store but keep in mind i dig dinged up instruments, but at a steep discount IF all else is fine and i really like the instrument.

Took it back today. The rep at GC gave me no issues on the return, and it sounded like it wasn't the first time he saw this type of damage on an extended scale bass. Now I just need to wait for my next one to come in, and keep my fingers crossed that it turns out OK this time....

Thanks, all for the input.

When the guy tried hanging the bass back on the wall, the neck was too wide for the wall hangar - he had to place it in at a precarious angle to get it to fit between the posts. The damage on the bass made it pretty clear that the bass fell from the wall, and based on the way it was sitting when put back on the wall, I wouldn't be surprised if it fell more than once.

Maybe someone who's a better haggler than I could use all this info to negotiate a price down to $600 or below... that's about what my cutoff would be based upon everything I saw.

That bass needs to go on a floor stand! Good to hear you had no problems with the return.
