Gear for metal tone?

I just started listening to the Unquestionable Presence album by Atheist and I'm in love with Roger Patterson's tone. It sounds like a fretless bass but it's got such a growly thick punch to it. Maybe a Warwick and an Ampeg? Either way, what would you guys suggest for a beefy, thick, growly punch for a quick fingerstyle?

Not sure what Roger P. used, but he didn't play on that record anyway. He was, sadly, killed in an accident with the tour van before the album was recorded. The bass player on U.P. is Tony Choy. Take a listen to the Piece of Time album for Roger P's tone.

For growly punch in metal, you can't go wrong with a Warwick thumb, IMO.
