Gear security - tracking

Regarding the recent thread about faulknersj recovering his long-ago stolen bass (love to see that he got it back, last I heard was 'tacos'), I noticed a few comments about gear insurance, and how expensive and/or seemingly ineffective it is.

I wondered if there is a tracking device you can hide somewhere in your amp or cab, or electronics cavity in your bass? If it was stolen, you could call the cops and get them to go with you - to where you know it is.

Does anyone have any experience with these or similar devices? I think at $20 a throw that'd be pretty cheap insurance and I'd like to find something suitable.

The marketing BS on the Tile site is just too strong to handle.
Use as many Tiles as you want; as long as it's not more than 8.
You never have to worry about the battery; just buy a whole new one after a year.

I saw that, from what I gathered, the related smartphone app could only store 8 tiles on it. So maybe you'd be able to get second (/third, etc) app if you wanted tiles on more things? I don't know.

As for the battery thing, I still reckon $20 a year per $1000 - $2000 item is better peace of mind than the prospect of having to justify anything to an insurance company and go through their rigmarole.

If there is any experience with this or of something effective out there like this, I'd love to find out about it. I'd feel more secure than with insurance, anyway.

I'm not criticizing the product, I'm criticizing the marketing department.

That's cool, I'm not defending it. I just think if every phone has a GPS system amongst whatever else it does, the technology itself must be tiny, and in this day and age there must be some product that does the job I'm asking about. I don't know that eight items is too bad, you'd have to prioritise a little.
