Hello guys i just became parent of an audient id 22 and avalon u5 :hyper:

i am looking forward for my new youtube video and to see the difference with my old stuff (scarllet solo)


i am thinking to use it like this bass - avalon - line output - audient mic input and from avalon thru - darkglass b7k - audient di to take the grid sound

ok here is the question has anyone buy or test this interface and how responds for bass rec?

ok i have serious problem with u5!

today i try first time to play with my avalon and at first i smell something i dont know what and i also notice that the power light indicator flashing in a very strange way, like it has some problem with the electricity.. furthermore when i am putting the xlr from u5 to interface i hear too many sounds

Looks like you may have some issues with the Avalon you'll need to take care of. What did you mean by "hear too many sounds"?

I've been using an Audient id22 for the last year or so. I got it specifically because you can bypass the preamp on it if you decide to use an external preamp, such as your U5. I use a Noble or Millenia TD1 and take the balance out into the effects return using an XLR to TRS cable. The Audient preamps are great though if you ever decide to use them. I've recorded straight into the interface in a pinch and it's responded very well.

how do you bypass preamp btw?

Hope your Avalon is able to be fixed!

To bypass the preamp, you just need to connect the output of your external preamp into the ADC Insert Returns of the iD22 (either channel 1 or 2 will work). You'll need an Female XLR to 1/4" TRS cable for it to work as the Avalon U5 does not have a balanced 1/4" output. Connect the XLR to the Line Level 600 ohm output of your U5 and connect the 1/4" TRS side to the "Ret 1" or "Ret 2" inputs behind your iD22, then you will have effectively bypassed the mic preamps on your iD22.

ok cause i am really scrap at this cable informations,what is defference between 1/4" TRS cable and 1/4 cable?


and second question if i go thru the avalon to my darkglass for overdrive to mix them later with the clear sound what connection shoud i use? should i take the di output from darkglass to mic input of audient?

No worries man I went through the same process of learning when I first started. There's quite a bit of terminology here so I hope you don't mind.

First things first, the typical cables with 1/4" plugs you use to connect your bass into an amp is a TS (Tip-Sleeve) cable which is used for mono, unbalanced signals. The other type is the TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) cable which either can be used either for mono, balanced signals or stereo signals. Visually, you can tell from looking at the cable - the TS cable has a single line around the end of the plug while the TRS cable has two (see What's the difference between TS and TRS cables? - SweetCare for images and more information).

If you're interested to figure out what balanced/unbalanced signals are, I found a good article on the aviom website: Invalid Link Removed. There are quite a lot of factors involved so you can read it if you're interested.

In this case, the Avalon U5 outputs a balanced, XLR output. The iD22's insert return takes in 1/4" balanced input. Since the iD22 does not have XLR inputs for its insert return jacks, you need a cable that is a female XLR on one end and a 1/4" TRS on the other. You should be able to find these cables pretty easily.

thank you so much i get it! so when i use audient's mic inputs and retern inputs i should always use trs cables or this is only a fact for avalon usage (or similar balanced outputs) ?

When you're plugging into the Audient's mic inputs or the DI input you should use a regular TS cable from your instrument/end of your effects chain since those are designed to take unbalanced signals. While using TS cables to plug into the insert return will likely work, it's better to use TRS for the benefits of a balanced signal if you need it. I use it to bypass the mic preamp of the Audient if I'm using an external preamp like your U5 but you could use it for a bunch of other things as well like patching effects in.

ok totally get it

I have news from the electrician he told me nothing is wrong with the power on avalon so he going to check the outputs to see if there are ok cause when i connect avalon to audient i hear every 1- 2 sec annoying sounds like radio interference or clipping

update!

ok i have good news the electrician fix it ! The U5 was ok nothing wrong the only problem was that the previous owner (a singer) he had never used it so it was full of dust, electrician cleared it very well and changed some filters

he say that it is like new and he really like the sound and the build quality of avalon (he is bass player too)
so thumps up for avalon.... i am waiting now to sent it and to see all of its beauty with my own ears :woot:

BTW Fenix, electrician made me an xlr - trs cable so i am ready to bypass the preamp

Good to hear! The U5 and iD22 are great sounding units. Hope you have hours of fun recording with that setup!
