Double Bass Gear you wished worked out... (DB forum thread)

My fingers would get worn out listing everything that didn’t work out.
The amount of time and money I (and I am sure many others) have spent is almost depressing if it wasn’t for the place I have reached in my tonal/volume goals in the different projects I’m in. Chasing the rabbit down the hole can be exhausting.

I actually do play DB. I only have one, a 1941 Kay O100B. I played it and very little electric for about a decade when I was in a standards-with-a-horn-section-me-in-a-tuxedo type band.

i also bought a Mackie SRM150 after a recommendation from a few guys here when i first joined. i thought it would be a cheap amp/monitor i could put on a pole next to me. never could dial in a good bass tone but i still have it. turns out, it is an awesome monitor! we play in a corner at a bar in a tight spot. that little box on a mic stand is all we need for a monitor. we run acoustic guitar, all the vocals and harp through it. gets pretty loud and sounds great! very portable and when you use an iron base stand, has a very small footprint.

this really defines the love/hate relationship i have with TB. ive spent so much money on the wrong stuff but, now i have the right gear for every situation.

I own a 200RCB (the 200MB head only version) when you remove power transformer from speaker enclosure of the 200MB it requires a larger housing for all the amplifiers components. Still a great DB amp. That EQ circuit would make a great preamp stomp box.

Oddly, my original post disappeared, so I"ll try this again.

The 1981 Carvin SC2000 amp, and BM115-J (J for 15" JBL), promised much. Unfortunately, it delivered little.

Distorting, on command, I firmly belive the cabinet was not built to handle that big JBL.

In truth, "Tone not included," should have been labeled on the box.

It spent its best days as a keyboard, and side-throw, monitor.

also, on a positive note. here is gear i heard about on Talkbass and am glad i own:

fDeck HPF
Acoustic Image Amplifiers
Euphonic Audio Amplifiers and Cabinets
RevSound Cabinets

and for my BG gear.... just kidding i know where i am :)

but i did get my chops and electric rig up to gig standards when the time comes thanks to TB

I frequently venture over to the BG side when it's something I want to know about. Couldn't get the FDeck HPF to

work with Walter Woods amplifiers. The timbre changes when I put it through the HPF and then into the front end of

one of Walter's amps. EA and AI make incredible gear and it's virtually impossible to find their products here in St. Louis.

I would have never known about the Doubler or Double Shot, if I hadn't read through the threads here.

All of my current gear I learned about through TB, I don't regret any of it but I do research forever before buying.

Fdeck 2 - attached to the tail piece on my DB. No electrified DB player should leave home without one (IMO, YMMV of course).
GK MB800 amp - a real work horse - overkill for DB but fine for EUB and I wouldn't want less for BG.
Fearful 12/6 cab - for loud gigs. (+ 15/6 for stupid loud gigs but I'm getting too old for those).
Another DIY cab thread. Loud, Small, and Cheap. 22 pounds that pounds. - for lower volume gigs.
