Gecko necks

Guess the title of this similar post wasnt "catchy" enough:p:hiding:, so I'm reposting. I wanted to hear some input on people with Warmoth Gecko 5string (and 6, if you wanna add) necks. I'm used to the "baseball" thickness of a 2000 German Warwick Corvette Std.5 all-wenge neck. How would they compare in thickness to your knowledge? I'm interested in building one, but would like some helpful input before pursuing further. Thank you.:bassist:

I can't really compare the Gecko to the Corvette neck fairly, I only played a few Warwicks back when Guitar Center still carried the brand. Even then it wasn't for very long... I really like the sound, but could never get over the narrower string spacing.

I'd categorize the Gecko neck as a nice medium neck... It doesn't feel too blocky, but isn't the thinnest neck I've played either. Think somewhere between a Fender Jazz 5 neck and an Ibanez SR neck, leaning towards the Fender side of the scale.

Hope that helps... :)

I was hoping their size was more from the width from the 1st to the 5th string, and not the "baseball bat" roundness of the neck itself.

You're right, the width is what gives the Gecko necks their beef... Not a baseball bat neck. The string spacing is nice with the Geckos too. Comfortable for fingerstyle, but plenty of room for slapping.

Glad I could help. :)

I played a Gecko neck for years. It's not nearly as thick as a Warwick, and not as thick a Spector, but it is wider than those. However, you can order the "narrow" version, which is meant for a 17.5mm spacing as opposed to a 19mm spacing at the bridge.

My '08 Fender Jazz V is thinner than the Gecko medium 5. The old Jazz necks were pretty thick, but the new ones are thinner, so that's not necessarily a good comparison - depending on your point of reference (old Fender vs. new).

Ultimately, I shaved down my Gecko to be very much in line with my Rick Turner and newer Fender Jazz V. I haven't played it yet, but I'm excited to get it going soon. I got used to those and decided to give it a shot. We'll see...

Sounds good. I didn't like the string spacing on the 'wick at the nut cause it was too narrow for me, and was too small at the pups for my right hand to slap. The 'wick is all I have to compare to, and woulda enjoyed more string spacing for sacrificing neck "girth". I was just curious on their Gecko necks if they'd be better for what I'm looking for, and where to start( medium or wide).

The narrow string spacing is exactly why I never took the plunge on a Warwick. Looked into a Thumb bolt on once, but the wider neck option was an extra $300. I sold an Ibanez SR535 for the same reason. Nice neck, but the string spacing wasn't comfortable enough for me. I don't have gorilla hands, but I do love me some slap funk...

When I built my Gecko, they only had one size neck for the 5's, the medium one they offer now. Comfortable spacing at the headstock and full Pbass 4 spacing at the bridge... nicely playable feel with plenty of room for slapping.

Lowfreqgeek nailed it, they're not overly thick necks, but they've got enough substance to make it feel solid. I'd say it's a shade thinner than my '06 Fender Jazz V... 2008 was a big redesign year for the Pbass V / Jazz V, so that might have a bit to do with his experience. Keep in mind though, my Gecko was a build from the very first run of the model, so that might have something to do with my experience. :)

Mine was too! I was one of the first with a Gecko as they had barely been out for a few months when I ordered my first set of parts.

I don't believe they've changed the profile, per conversations in the past with Eric Wylie @ Warmoth.

Mines a wide,
Best decision I made. Takes a little getting used to, but real easy to play. I have to say that I'm so glad Warmoth offer this alternative. It saved me a lot of money.

It's great for pick, fingers, or slap.
