GED 2112 in conjunction with other amps?

I'm curious if anyone is using the GED 2112 sansamp in conjunction with another preamp/EQ, or is it used primarily only with a poweramp. I'm thinking of getting one to use with my combo amp, to increase the quality of the tone and I wanted to know if anyone else has done the same. The amp in question is a Peavey Max 115 (2). I have a solution for the tone now, but I've been a big fan of Geddy for years, and it would allow me to just take the GED 2112 to practise and plug into the PA instead of hauling the Peavey.

Any thoughts?

Yeah I've been thinking about that but it's not available in Canada yet as far as I can see .

The last press release I read said the release date for the YYZ pedal is sometime this May.

I run my GED-2112 into a stereo power amp. I run it's Drive channel into one channel of my power amp, and it's Deep channel into my power amp's other channel, then each channel goes to separate speaker cabinets.

The folks that use the GED-2112 into a single amp use a "Y" cable to combine both channels, there's also an internal jumper modification to achieve the same result, and I believe there's a few folks here that combine the channels by plugging each channel of the GED into separate channels of a small mixing board, then they somehow combine the channels, and feed that back into a single channel amplifier.

Even though I haven't these methods to run the GED-2112 into a single channel amp, and I haven't personally tried the YYZ pedal, the pedal looks like a much, much easier option, to me anyway.

Thank you. That's some good info. I have time to decide, so I may wait for the pedal.

I run my GED-2112 as you do (stereo power amp, separate speakers). On occasion where I've only used one speaker, I'll combine the channels using an external 1/4" patch cable (Deep Output into the Effects Return with the 50/50 switch engaged; Drive Output feeds your amp/speaker -- the output level of the Drive Channel is then your Master Volume, and the output level of the Deep Channel blends in the amount of the Deep Channel to the mix). The internal jumper modification will also work (but is probably more for those who want to always run the GED that way), or blending inputs through a mixer. I'm not sure a "Y" cable will actually yield satisfactory results.

If you're going to run the output of a GED-2112 into a combo amp, I'd suggest 2 things:

1. Wait for the YYZ pedal - a more compact arrangement, and since you're not running into a power amp I'm assuming you don't need to rack your preamp.
2. The output of either of these devices is Line Level, so you don't want to go into the instrument input of your combo amp (although maybe if you have an active switch that will reduce the level of the input signal enough?) as you will overdrive your combo's preamp section. What you'll want to do is by-pass your combo amps preamp section by running the output of your GED into the "Effects Return" of your combo - which feeds the poweramp section of your combo. You could get an A/B switch box if you wanted to be able to switch between the GED and your combo's preamp section on the fly.

I should have noted that the GED-2112 allows you to "pad" the outputs by 20 dB so if you're set on running this into the instrument input of your combo (so that you can further shape your signal with your combo amps pre-amp section - not that I imagine that could somehow improve on what you'd get out of the GED), you may be able to do so by engaging the output pad switch on the GED-2112.

Excellent post, John. And thanks for correcting my "Y" cable suggestion. I knew there's a method to combine the channels on the GED's back panel by using a patch cable(s), but I definitely don't know how it's done. I agree, the YYZ pedal appears to be much easier when using a single amplifier.

Some great advice. Thank you! Part of me is thinking of getting a power amp now, as I already have two Eden 110s, or I may wait for the YYZ pedal. The Peavey combo has been a disappointment ever since I got it, and it doesn't have an effects loop to bypass the on board preamp .Currently I run a small Vox guitar head as a preamp into the Peavey, the Vox has micro tube tech, and I actually love my tone right now. Playing bass is really a hobby of mine now, so I wanted to include some Geddy in the mix simply because he is my favourite player of all time. So my concerns are not really motivated by occupational, or professional, concerns. The feedback you all have provided has been great, so I really appreciate it!

So how would I use the new 2112 pedal (basically the rack version into pedal form). I know you hit a switch inside to combine both channels but what output do you use to plug from the pedal into the poweramp? The drive or deep? confusing.

I'm pretty sure that if you use the internal switch to combine them, either the drive or deep output is now the two combined. On the rackmount unit, if you use the external patch cable method (Deep out to effects return with 50/50 switch engaged), the drive output is the combined output.

I see. Well I might just go for the YYZ. I don't want to exactly sound like Geddy of course so just having the footswitch would be great. I'd rather use my amp's eq setting to fine tune and maybe grab a tube EQ (like the Noble) down the road.

I use the GED2112 into a powerful QSC amp for big stages and I use a 70's Acoustic 136/140 bass head for small shows because it has two channels to take the Drive and Deep separately and drive a single 15" or maybe a 12" cab. Sad that there are so few bass amps that have two channels. Comes in handy in many situations.
