Geddy Lee Vs Standard ( MIM) Jazz

Read the following posts, there was a big argument that followed! Lots of shops are currently showing stock images of Geddys with 60s positioning, and I have seen actual photos of one for sale, which was bought new in 2015, with the same 60s position. The seller was a long time forum member over at Basschat and I don't think he was trying to scam anyone, after I spotted and queried it he says he checked with Fender who confirmed that they changed them. Since nobody else seems to have seen one in the wild I assume it was a short term change and they are now back to 70s spec.

Popular opinion on here though is that a spec change is simply impossible and one of the following must have happened:

- Someone at Fender screwed up in Photoshop and some scammer took advantage of that by making a fake Geddy bass and putting it up for sale.

Or

- Fender produced one single Geddy with 60s spacing by mistake, took photos of it for all the retailers to use as a stock image, then sold it to some random dude in the UK.


Ultimately we never got to the bottom of it and probably never will! I'm tired of discussing it now too unless someone linked to Fender or a retailer has some actual facts rather than opinions to contribute.

I believe it's the second one. Fender is slow to update their website with new photos of their products. It took them a few months to change the basses that had Badass bridges into the models with their new version of a Badass II. During that time, people were asking whether those certain basses still had the Badass because they read Leo Quan shut down and all that jazz.

I'm sorry. I was half asleep and didn't want to read through all of those pages.

I am a firm believer that they won't change anything on the Geddy Lee basses in terms of construction. Not something that drastic, anyways.

The New MIM Geddy Lee basses has a slightly thicker profiled neck but still maintaining that classic skinny width.

I think I stumbled upon the answer to this conundrum. Someone was selling a "Classic '70s Jazz" on the TB Classifieds. These MIM basses use the same bodies as the Geddy-sigs. Apparently, when he contacted Fender about the oddly '60s-style pickup spacing, he was told it was a factory error. It's quite possible that several units slipped out of the factory and "into the wild" before the error was noticed.
