Here in Australia , Rush , hasn't been as big in mainstream music, but I bought 'Rush ' and 'Fairwell to kings' in about '78 on LP (12 inch record ) I have most of thier albums on CD now.
The bass line that really stands out for me is Cygnus X-1
But I agree with someone else who said the Geddy just doesn't play a bad line anywhere

In no particular order, these are the tunes that i think Geddy really shines:bassist:
Xanadu
Cygnus X-1
Distant Early Warning
Driven

They may not be the most technically advanced lines in there repetoire, but i don't listen to rush because of sheer skill, I listen to music that moves me. Thats why I think Xanadu is the most amazing piece of work they have created.

I'm generally more a fan of the 70's Rush stuff, but dag nammit, 'Mission' is Manna from heaven, gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh.
still can't pick a favourite GL bassline tho!

I hear you there! At first, I was hooked by the more immediate songs on HYF, but with one or two listens and some concentration, the inherent beauty of "Mission" became apparent! Simply breath taking, certainly one of those "brings a tear to your eye" songs in terms of beauty.

I'll agree that Analogue Kid is ace, the bass solo bit at the beginning of the song is brilliant, a rare treat from Geddy! Brilliant contrast when it goes the slow parts of the song too, very moving.

Although New World Man is my favourite song off that album, very catchy. Possibly one of the best choruses ever written. I'd love to hear it played with the late 80's (pre Rupert Hine though) sound-Wal basses, Tama drums (power windows style!) and Singature guitars!

That siad, I'm very fond of the recording on Signals, it's very "roomy", reverb to the max!

That Wal sound on Emotion Detector and Middletown Dreams is unparalleled, an absolutely stellar sonic display. Power Windows is the embodiment of crisp, fluid, jaw-dropping basslines that exude positivity. Also, The Big Money showcases his dexterity, coordination, and endurance live. It really is an innovative and complicated bassline, and he sings against the rhythm like he's holding down whole notes or pounding eighths. Meanwhile, never looking at the neck to see where he's at or to transition. Amazing! Especially with the added pressure of 30,000 people staring at him waiting for him to mess up.

A nod towards Alien Shore from Counterparts as well.
