Geddy's bass tone

Hey, glad to possibly help. Like I said before, I so wish the internet was around like this when I was a kid in the seventies learning to play guitar. Guitar Player mag was the only real source for back then and that wasn't much help! VCR's were relatively new and nobody was putting out instructional videos at that time.
I would get frustrated trying to find out what my idol's were using for gear and HOW they used it.

I enjoy passing along any info when I can and I appreciate you all for your insights.

Thanks for the replies about the crowd mics/in-ear monitor mixes, Russ! You are a gracious man with your time for all of us!

Hi Russ,

Thanks for being here and answering so many questions! I have one about the GL jazz. Not sure if you can answer but I watched an interview with Geddy where he said he wasn't happy with the tunning pegs on the first run, and that on the next run they were going to be changed. Is there an easy way for us to tell if it is the new version of the tuners? I have wanted a GL for a while now but when I saw that I figured I would wait for the newer run. Sorry to bug you if there was no way for you to answer. See you guys May 1st at Phoenix!

Thanks for all your kind words.
I'm going to sound like a jerk, but I cannot answer these type of questions. I had talked about it in earlier posts and realized it is not for me to discuss. Whatever Ged said and whatever Fender wants to do about this is SO not my problem! Fender is great to me and I will not comment about this question any more.
Please contact Fender about this.

Sorry,

Well for what its worth, I have a Geddy bass and never had one instance of trouble with the tuners. They are probably not as smooth to turn as some others (like my other bass that has Schaller tuners) but never had a problem with it staying in tune. Do what you want, but dont let that stop you from picking one up. I have talked with others that said the same thing (that they feel on the cheap side but never had a problem with tuning).

Ged uses the standard LS Swing 66 set of Rotosounds. The gauges are: .105-.80-.65-.45

He uses this set for all his basses except for his Steinberger, which he never uses. For the Stein, I had put a set of similar gauge Roto`s, made for Stein`s, but I can`t remember which actual set. That was years ago!!!

Russ,

Do you know which gauge of Roto's Geddy uses on his basses?
Thanks :)

Phil

Russ,

(If you know) What does Geddy do with all the bass's he has had throughout the years? Like his Wals, or the Steinberger? Do they just sit at this house/home studio?

Can you convince him to bust out the Wal for some of the songs like Mission where he originally used it similar to what he is doing with the Rick and Bangkok?

I know one of his nephews in the business has (had) a few of them.

To the Rotosounds, I put them on my Geddy Clone and it really made a huge difference to the sound of that bass! I am becoming more of a flat wound kinda guy myself, but they are on the Ged copy for the sound alone. I still can't play anywhere near what Geddy can, but at least I sound like a monkey hackin at a Geddy Jazz......

:D

June 27th is comin up FAST!

Geddy should use the Wal for "Big Money"

One of the interesting things about seeing Chris Squire play is how he uses different basses on different songs ...

It would be cool to see Geddy use the Wal, the double necked 4080 Rickenbacker, the 4002 Rickenbacker, the 3002 Rickenbacker, the Steinberger, and of course his array of jazz basses. And then add a Musicman, or a warwick, or some other bass.
