Excuse me. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Aerosmith, Rush, almost any British rock band (sorry mates ;) ), ......Loverboy, ..........Janis Joplin, Mama Cass (equal time, ladies). Has anyone seen Def Leppard lately?!?, etc., etc.

Is Gene really any uglier than any of these people!:eyebrow: :spit:

Hmm, don't take my word for it, but I heard that David Gilmour played the bass on several Floyd tracks. I even heard he played the fretless on "Hey You" because Waters couldn't handle a fretless! :eek:

Come on guy's Gene is the real deal, that is all Gene Live, Playing and singing. We have beat this to death many of times around here. I also think that Gene played Most if not all his studio parts, It was Ace that was wasted so much that they had to get the Kulick brothers to play some of his parts on Love Gun And Dynasty and I believe that Ace'as pic was on the cover of unmasked and he never even played a lick on the record. Peter Chris is a whole other story, He had the timing of a baby when he and Ace were binging on drugs alcohol they had to get a studio cat to play some of his parts also.
I Play a crapload of KISS for a female fronted KISS cover band (Joe Turski came to see us the other night) and Gene is no slouch try learning the parts to She or Getaway, 100,000 years, Most of Kiss's hooks come from Gene's playing, He does all the right stuff for that band.
If it wasn't for Gene and the Album Rock & Roll Over I would have never picked up the bass back in 78... I have seen them a half a dozen times from 79 to last year and everytime I have seen them Gene play's his A$$ off!!!

I look at it as "if you think you're so much better than Gene Simmons, why aren't we writing a thread about you, jealous, big-headed bitch..."

The people who rag on Gene (and other "famous" musicians) are the ones who sit around in their bedrooms or dead end bar bands convincing themselves and anyone who listens to their tripe that they're so much better than the "star" and the "star" sucks.

Oh, and if you posted that you think Gene is ugly, he thinks you're ugly too! :D

Ohhh, okay, that I knew. I thought it was like Gene Simmons or Fieldy, that's right, I said Fieldy! Preston Crump was asked to ghost on 2 KoRn songs, and he declined.

Thanks for the laugh. "Neener neener" I suppose. And, yes, he is ugly. I never said he was a bad bassist, just not super-stellar. For that genre, and that time, and his situation, he needn't be...no snobbery in that sentiment.

And Funkster, that's cool bro. I hear ya.

Funkster's right, Gene does play all his stuff live. I've seen them over 20 times, and it's definatlely him playing, he really drives the band along. He also makes mistakes occasionally, don't we all?
As for the studio, no Gene doesn't always play his bass parts anymore. He used to on most of the classic stuff in the seventies but as he says he's not that interested in playing bass. In the studio it's often Paul, Bruce Kulick, Ace or any one who's around that does the bass parts. A roady played bass on Shandi. Jean Beauvoir played bass on much of Animalize.
The people still believing the cow's tongue story might want to look into the medical facts here. We're still trying to find a way to implant animal organs into humans, the problems with tissue rejection are enormous. The technology simply wasn't available to do this kind of operation in the early seventies, and still isn't now, in case you're thinking of getting one...

KISS has some excellent bass lines on the recordings, whether it's him playing or not. Many of their songs wouldn't be nearly what they are without the bass on them.

I'm fairly certain I've seen a live video though where he has both his hands off the bass while we hear one of those trademark bass lines... maybe it's an overdub?

Flag noted. I'll try to find a link that verifies this, but David Gilmour has mentioned it in a number of interviews. It wasn't done on every occasion, but it happened. One specific instance is the bass twiddles at the beginning of "Pigs (3 different ones)" from Animals.
But, y'know, they also had a session guy some in to play the picked guitar on "Is There Anybody Out There" from the Wall, too. Which Gilmour cops to openly.

Now this is not a slam on the Rog or the Floyd at large, by any means, as I am a big fan. But I don't think anyone would seriously argue their technical proficiency (except maybe for Gilmour)... would they? Jaco/Emerson/Bruford they ain't -- and that's not really what they're about anyway.

And just because Gene's kinda unnattractive doesn't mean other people can't be too! :eyebrow:
Keep in mind (and read the thread) -- I came out loud'n'proud in defense of Mr. Simmons!

EDIT: Incidentally, just observing that there's lots of pointless umbrage being taken on this thread to lots of pretty mild opinions for and against Gene. I guess this is why there were moans and groans when it was brought up; this territory's been covered before, ad nauseum?
